LAKEVILLE - A little bit of everything helped the LaVille football team in the high school football game Friday at Lancer Field. Coach Jeff Kaiser's club used special teams, defense, and both the running game and passing game en route to a 49-6 Class 1A Sectional #41 championship game victory. Chase Lee helped jump-start LaVille's scoring effort against 10th-rated West Central by taking the opening kick off 73 yards for a touchdown. "Getting off to a fast start is a huge advantage in high school sports and we have focused on that aspect of the game," said Kaiser, who watched his team win its second sectional title in his third season in Lakeville. "We have been on the other side of that this season and the guys understand the importance of making that happen. Chase was able to field the opening kickoff and take it to the end zone by using his vision and field awareness. We practice our special teams through the week so each of our guys are ready to do their assignments at any given time." Besides Lee’s special teams score, LaVille added a defensive touchdown late in the second quarter when Konnor Amor returned an interception 86 yards just before halftime to send the teams into the locker room with a 28-0 lead. We asked Kaiser about Amor's interception and subsequent TD return. "Anytime you can get a score from the defense it's huge!," said the Lancer skipper. "We talk about getting those points before half each time we get late in the second quarter as it gives you momentum going in and builds confidence within the team. Konnor played his assignment and got the pick 6 at that crucial time that put a tremendous amount of doubt in West Central going into the half". Looking at the scouting report and checking West Central's scores, Kaiser and his club knew the Trojans could do some damage. "With West Central coming in averaging 48 points a game and having a RB (Drea Villareal) that was right around the 1500 yard mark for the season, we knew we needed to play assignment football as a unit," explained Kaiser. "As a result of us doing this, the defense played extremely well and gave us solid field position all game." While special teams and the defense ignited Lancer Nation, the offense wanted in on making their contributions, along with Stafford. "Going into the game, we talked to Cole (Stafford) about what he needed to get yardage wise to hit the 1.000 yard mark for the season and he responded very well and surpassed that mark by almost 100 yds," Kaiser said of Stafford running for 227 yards and finishing with four touchdowns. "His drive to be successful has been a solid piece to our success so far this season." When asked about Friday's championship, Kaiser said, "This win allowing us to be sectional champs is a compliment to each of our players buying in and trusting the process as we were at a crossroad mid season sitting 2-4. We talked to the team about the big picture and what it was going to take in order for us to capture some hardware. As a result of their determination and drive to be successful, we have been able to right the ship and capture the first piece of hardware as we continue to look for more." One final highlight to the sectional title victory was when senior lineman Kaid Hernandez found himself in the backfield in the final minutes. Hernandez took his place in the offensive backfield and busted his way in from three yards out for the Lancers final touchdown. On the defensive side, LaVille held WCHS, who came in averaging 45 ppg, to just six points. The Blue Crew 'D' also limited the Trojans to 163 total yards, with most coming in the second half. LaVille improved to 8-4 overall and are set to travel to #3 Pioneer (11-1) for the November 14 IHSAA regional.
