BOURBON, IN. - It is week two of the Indiana High School Athletic Association football regular season. Following a 42-0 victory over neighborhood rival Bremen on August 19, Class 2A #12 LaVille begins Hoosier North play. The road to the HNAC title starts in Bourbon as the Lancer football team faces Class 1A #12 Triton. Kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live by TTSN at https://www.tritontrojans.org The Lancers lead the all-time series, 36-17-1, over Triton. LaVille has won the last three straight in the series and LaVille coach Will Hostrawser is 8-1 v. Triton. The last Triton victory over LaVille in Bourbon came in a 22-14 victory over LHS on August 25, 2017. LaVille returns all 22 of its letterwinners from a year ago and that showed as Coach Will Hostrawser's crew got off to a quick start. Senior Paul DeWitt took the handoff on the first play of the regular season and bolted 60 yards for a touchdown. The LaVille offensive line - Collin Allen, AJ Bedock, Erik Bedock, Hudson Doyle, Garrett Wagoner - engaged their blocks and opened a gap for DeWitt, who cleared the linebackers and kicked it into another gear for the end zone."Obviously Paul DeWitt had a monster game running the ball," said Hostrawser. "But our offensive line played very well up front opening alleys for him to run through." DeWitt rushed 11 times for career-high 237 yards and two touchdowns. LaVille quarterback Lucas Plummer was equally effective, completing five of seven passes for four touchdowns. Owen Smith caught two TD passes, while Noah Richhart and Ross Wagoner hauled in one touchdown each. The Lancers opened the game by scoring twice in the first 10 plays to jump to a 14-0 lead. LaVille scored the first five times it touched the ball to take a big lead. From running to passing and playing defense the Lancers were focused in. The defense that picked up its first shutout of the season held Bremen to 71 yards rushing and hauled in three interceptions - Collin Czarnecki, Dustin Gill, Owen Smith. When asked what impressed him about his team, Hostrawser said,"numerous players played well in the Bremen game - I felt our mindset was right when we took the field as a whole. We did not get lost in the noise of expectation - we played hard in the moment. Sometimes when you score early in the game, players relax and let down - I did not see any signs of that Friday night. They wanted to get more - that is a promising sign." As LaVille transitions into week two, Triton becomes the next concentration point for Hostrawser and his club. The Trojans also picked up a shutout in week one, a 49-0 victory over South Central (Union Mills). THS has a talented back looking for gaps and holes as well from his offensive line. Anthony Schuh carried the ball just eight times last week, but the junior back racked up 219 yards and four touchdowns. Schuh scored on runs of seven, 48, 49 and 78 yards, all in the first half. The Lancer defense will also have to look out for junior quarterback Cole Shively. He completed one pass of four attempts, but rushed the ball six times for 84 yards and two TDs against the Satellite. Triton rushed for 344 yards in the win and outgained South Central, 381-52, in total yards. We had a chance to talk with Hostrawser about the Triton game. What will the Trojans bring offensively and who are a couple of Triton players to watch? "Triton runs a modified Winged T scheme on offense. They have one of the best running backs in the conference in Anthony Schuh (#22). Their QB is a true dual threat - Cole Shively (#2)." What will Triton bring defensively and who are a couple of defensive players to watch? "Triton runs a 4-4 hybrid defensive front and has an exceptional linebacker crew as well as a physical defensive line. Cody Shively (#75) and Reilly Wood (#42) are a couple of their standouts." What concerns you about this Triton football team Friday? "They have exceptional perimeter speed. They played a lot more physical in week #1 in all three phases." What do you feel like are important factors in deciding Friday's game against Triton? "We must mean business when we take the field at Triton. Defensively our pursuit must be spot on to combat their perimeter speed. Our offense must sustain drives and finish. Special teams must clean up our kick coverages."
