Football Takes Down Caston

LAKEVILLE, IN. - Over the last three weeks, LaVille head football coach Will Hostrawser learned a few more things about his team. "When you play on the road, routines are very important," explained Hostrawser. "When you arrive at another school, on the field communication is very important as well. I thought our guys have done a nice job in those areas during each of the road games so far." The Class 2A #4-ranked Lancer football team returned to Lancer Field after three consecutive road games. LaVille continued its routine by scoring on eight consecutive possessions en route to a 63-6 victory over visiting Caston in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference at Lancer Field. The 2022 schedule brought with it the need for LaVille to hit the road early in the season on three straight weeks to Triton, Pioneer, and Winamac. Friday, Lancer football again followed routine and on the field communication to take another step in their quest for a HNAC championship. Lancer running back Paul DeWitt got the call on the first five carries of the game and packed bags for a 28-yard touchdown run. On Caston's first possession, the Comets fumbled the football and LaVille's Jonathan Neese quickly pounced on the pigskin to set the Lancer offense up at the C29. Lucas Plummer found Ross Wagoner open in the middle of the field for a quick 6-second score. Plummer added the second of his nine point-after attempts and the hosts jumped to a quick lead. The offensive line continued to dominate and open up big holes as the LaVille backfield blasted through and into the end zone. Noah Richhart scored on TD runs of 3 and 34 yards, while DeWitt added his own 3-yard run. "Getting off to a quick start sets the tone for the game," said Hostrawser. "When we are able to get off to a quick start, it puts a lot of pressure on our opponent. "The game of football is violent in the trenches," continued the 10th-year LaVille skipper. "To date our line play has been good, but it can certainly improve. Our initial engagement on offensive line blocks has been solid all year as expected. However, we must continue to work on sustaining blocks longer on running plays each week." LaVille continued with more of the same in the second quarter, scoring in the air, on the ground, and on an interception. Owen Smith was on the receiving end of a 41-yard touchdown toss from Plummer, Jonathan Neese scored on a 5-yard run, Dustin Gill had a 2-yard TD, and Cody Allen took the ball to the house after stepping in front of Caston pass attempt. LaVille's defense held Caston without a first down in the first half and less than 60 yards of total offense. "The defense showed up this week with something to prove," noted Hostrawser. "We were able to hold Caston without a first down in the first half. I thought our defensive line played well stopping their running game, our pursuit was solid and our tackling for the most part was good too." The Lancer offense racked up 261 rushing yards to go with six touchdowns. "We executed our running attack well against Caston," said Hostrawser. "We are starting to play faster in our offensive execution. Our running backs are running through contact instead of to contact - that makes a big difference in gaining extra yards. It was nice to see the running attack clicking." Caston got on the board when Quinlan Kelly intercepted a pass and went 27 yards to paydirt. The 2-point conversion pass was incomplete. DeWitt led LaVille's rushing attack with 115 yards and two touchdowns. Noah Richhart chipped 38 yards on three carries and two TDs. Lucas Plummer attempted two passes — completing both for scores. Wagoner and Smith were his targets. The Lancer defense was at it again — picking off three Caston passes. The LaVille 'D' finished the game with five turnovers following two fumble recoveries. LaVille improves to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the HNAC. The Lancers will travel to Know on September 23. Caston drops to 0-5 and 0-4. The Comets will play host to North White, also on September 23.
