LAKEVILLE, IN. - At the beginning of the season, LaVille Boys Soccer coach Kevin Christy wasn't sure if there would be a Lancer Boys Soccer team for the 2022 campaign. As time went on, players started to join the team and Christy ended up with 14 on his roster. LaVille started the season 1-6-1 before turning things around for a 3-3 mark over the last six matches. Now, Christy has his squad in line for a Hoosier North Athletic Conference championship. Christy credits his team for working everyday to get better and raise their level of play. "Not knowing if you are having a team, to having a bunch of kids that are out there working just as hard as anyone," said Christy. "They have proven that they've gotten even further beyond the expectations from what we had for them." When asked about the leadership of his Lancer team, Christy says, "Leadership, obviously seniors are leaders. Ashton Artrip is a great leader. But the focus of the year with leadership has been that we were building all 14 of them to be leaders." After a 10-year absence from high school coaching, Christy came back to the sidelines at the start of 2022 season. "This is oddly familiar," said Christy about his return to high school coaching. "Because it has proven that high school kids are high school kids even a generation apart. They still have the same desires and work ethic. It's been fun and I'm happy we are back at it." Heading into the September 27 match against Caston, LaVille stands atop the HNAC standings with a 2-0 conference mark. The Lancers have defeated Culver Community, 2-0, and are coming off a thrilling 2-1 victory at Winamac. Caston comes in with a 0-1 conference record. Following the September 27 match at LaVille, the Comets play host to Winamac on September 29. So what does Christy know about Caston? "It sounds like they have a similar record and similar opponents," said Christy. "We haven't been able to see them play at all. But everything points for this to be a good match. Just like everyone in the conference." For Christy the objective is fairly simple. "We have to play our game," said Christy when asked about the keys to a victory. "Ninety-nine percent of the time we just need to go out and play our game. Being so young, sometimes less is better. We need to focus on the task and focus on our job individually. Along with controlling their own destiny in the HNAC, it will be Senior Night for both of the boys and girls soccer programs. "We expect good support for both matches," said Christy. "The idea has been to build the culture for soccer the best we can. The crowds have been getting bigger." Now it's just a matter of playing the match. A victory for LaVille clinches an outright championship. "Early in the season, getting them to set up the right things is important," said Christy. "Conference is 100% driven home that this is the expectation to go out and win this conference. Our goals tonight are the same as they always are - Good decision-making and all-out effort." * * * * * THE MATCH Teams: Caston (3-9) v. LaVille (4-9-1) Site: Newton Park, Lakeville, IN.
