LAKEVILLE, IN. – After a thrilling 27-21 comeback victory over North Judson-San Pierre in overtime a week ago, Class 2A #3 LaVille will travel to Culver for a 7 p.m. kick as the 2022 campaign enters the final week of the regular season. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. There is no pre-sale or on-line sale available. The game can be heard on Max 98.3FM and watched by clicking https://team1sports.com/CulverTV/?B=403435 The exciting win over a talented Blue Jay football team gave LHS at least a share of the 2022 Hoosier North Athletic Conference, the first-ever HNAC football trophy and first conference title since 1986. For this LaVille team, however, it has been back to work in preparation for the next opponent on the schedule. This week that happens to be Culver. "One of the strengths of these guys to date has been their ability to continue to work forward seeking ways to get better for the next opportunity," explained LaVille head football coach Will Hostrawser. "The week of preparation so far has been no different as there are several areas in which we can improve as a team. They continue to work hard together in preparation for Culver." In order for LaVille to win the conference outright, they will have to do it without quarterback/kicker Lucas Plummer. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior injured his shoulder on the last play of the third quarter against North Judson-San Pierre. It was a designed quarterback keeper and Plummer was injured on the tackle. LHS will take an eight-game winning streak into Friday's HNAC battle with Culver. The 2022 edition of Lancer Football matches three other LaVille football teams with the school-record eight straight victories. The 1971 team lost its first game of the season to Bremen, won eight consecutive games, then lost its final game of the season to River Forest. The 1971 team, coached by Chuck Barnum, allowed just 65 points and finished 8-2 overall. The 1985 squad also concluded 8-2, losing its first game of the season at Plymouth before rattling off eight straight victories. The Lancers lost a 12-7 decision to South Central (Union Mills) to close the '85 season under the direction of coach Larry Stillson. The last group to win eight in a row was the 1996 team. Coached by Kevin McCollough, LaVille lost its first two games of the year - Plymouth and Jimtown - then rolled off eight victories before finishing the season with a 12-0 loss to South Adams. The '96 edition of Lancer Football finished 8-3 overall. On Friday, the 2022 group has a chance to make its own mark on the Lancer history books. No other LaVille Football team has ever won nine straight games, let alone finish the regular season with a perfect record. We had a chance to chat with Coach Hostrawser about the North Judson game and the upcoming game against Culver. Let’s tie up the performance against North Judson. Could you please talk about a couple guys you felt played well and are worth mentioning for their efforts either on offense or defense. COACH: "Offense - I thought collectively the entire offensive unit played well. Paul DeWitt rams well while Noah Richhart blocked for him - then Noah ran well with Paul blocking for him. The offensive line did a great job opening up lanes. Lucas Plummer threw a TD pass to Owen Smith - Collin Czarnecki stepped right in at QB when Lucas got hurt and our offense rallied together to find a way to win. Defense - both Jon Neese and Ross Wagoner had monster games. They had several key plays on the defensive side of the ball to lead that unit." Talk about what impressed you about your team - defensively and offensively - following the NJSP game. COACH: "We had several adverse things happen during the game... turnovers, untimely penalties, injuries, missed scoring opportunities - but despite all those things, our guys showed a great deal of resiliency in pulling together and picking each other up to find a way to win. There was no finger pointing - just displays of mental toughness that turned out to be the difference in the ball game." What will the Cavaliers bring offensively and who are a couple of Culver players to watch? COACH: "Unlike Culver teams of the recent past, Culver has a diverse offensive attack. They have ran up to 16 different formations and throw the ball very well. Running back Shane Shuman is one of the best in the HNAC. QB Jason Cadle is deceptively fast. Their offensive line is a typical Culver offensive line - they are well coached, fast and physical." What will Culver bring defensively and who are a couple of defensive players to watch? COACH: "Culver runs a 4-4 on defense - a defense similar to North Judson. They are extremely physical in the box and their inside linebackers are stout. Shane Shuman and Braiden Molebush both have a nose for the football." What concerns you about this Culver football team Friday? COACH: "Their offensive versatility has gotten their opponents each week. They can bunch up and scrum run it or they can spread a defense out and throw it or run under coverages. They are going to be a handful." What do you feel are important factors in deciding Friday's game against the Cavaliers? COACH: "We must flat out get stops on defense this week. When we do, our offense must string together drives and cash in on scoring opportunities."
