ELKHART, IN. - It's GAMEDAY for LaVille Basketball! LaVille Lady Hoops are set to open the 2022-23 season at Jimtown on Thursday, November 3. Coach Nicholas Amor will take his Lancer Basketball team to Elkhart to face the Jimtown Jimmies. The junior varsity game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip, with the varsity game to follow. LaVille leads the series with Jimtown, 14-12, since 2000-01. The Lancers have won the last six straight and have not lost at Jimtown since a 42-38 JHS win on December 4, 2010. Seniors Lauren Edison, Heaylyn Kwiatkowski, and Lucy Sherk lead a group of eight letterwinners for LHS. Sherk, a 5-foot-11 post player, along with Heaylyn Kwiatkowski, a 5-foot 10 guard, are the top two scorers back for Amor’s club. Sherk led LaVille with 12.2 points per game and 8.8 rebounds a year ago. Kwiatkowski added 8.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and 1.9 assists per game. Edison chipped in a bucket per game, a couple of rebounds and steals per game. Among the remaining letterwinners are juniors Lily Smith and London Kwiatkowski. Sophomores back are Brooke Edison, Jasmine Foster, and Mikalah Kuskye. Senior Quincy Blodgett will also battle for varsity playing time. Other players include freshmen Kylah Bell, Heidi Naragon, Ragen Wagoner, Madi Singleton, and Ava Weil, along with sophomores Mackena Deason and Moriah Richhart. In the last meeting on November 4, 2021, Jimtown grabbed a 20-13 halftime lead before the host Lancers outscored JHS 26-13 in the second half for a 39-33 come-from-behind victory. Sherk led LaVille with 17 points, while Heaylyn Kwiatkowski added 11. Brooke Edison came off the bench to add four points. Faith Rock, a 2022 grad, chipped in with seven points. Jimtown's Justyce Williams led all scorers with 19 points. Abbey Brown added seven for the Jimmies. Last Saturday, Amor got the chance to watch his club during an intra-scrimmage and was pleased overall. "I saw a lot of good things," said Amor. "We ran our offense pretty well to only have two weeks to learn it. We ran it well even though the other team knew it." The Lancer coach also observed some things for his club to improve. "Some things we need to work on overall is just our passing, the turnovers were pretty high today," said Amor. "We'll definitely be working on passing and making good decisions." The LaVille scrimmage included opportunities to work on not only man-offense, but zone offense, and a bit of full-court pressure. "What I liked about what I saw is that we were looking at the right spot," explained the LaVille skipper. "We were looking for the right pass, now it is just executing and making that pass to open player. "They are pretty confident with the zone offense," continued Amor. "I think a lot of it is something they have run in the past and it is pretty similar to what I expect them to run. So they feel comfortable with it.The other thing is, I told them before the season started and I told them in the summer, I'm not a coach that is going to sit you because you took a shot. I want you to be a threat every time you catch, so with zone you can truly do that. Step up to the line every time you catch the ball and you might have opportunities to score." Jimtown enters the November 3 non-conference game against LaVille with a 0-1 record. The Jimmies visited Fairfield on November 1. The Falcons jumped to an early lead and defeated JHS, 55-30. Jimmie junior Justyce Williams finished with a game-high 17 points. Also scoring for JHS were sophomore Natalie Butler with six points, junior Abbey Brown four, and junior Alexis Garrettson three.
