LAKEVILLE, IN. -It's a basketball night in Lakeville! Class 1A No. 10 Argos comes to town for a non-conference Tuesday night special at Cox Gymnasium. The junior varsity game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, with the varsity to follow. Argos is off to a 2-1 start following a 67-57 win over West Central. The Dragons are led by senior JJ Morris. Coach Jason Breden's team has four seniors, a couple of sophomores, and four freshmen on the 2022-23 edition of Dragon Basketball. Argos leads the all-time series 44-35, including a pair of victories last season. AHS won the regular season tussle, 55-25 before a 26-24 nail-biter in the TCU Bi-County Basketball Tournament. Coach Michael Edison's LHS club is 1-2 and coming off a 42-37 victory at Bremen on December 1. The trio of Collin Czarnecki, Owen Smith, and Ross Wagoner sparked the Lancer offense in the win over BHS. Czarnecki scored 15 points, Smith 11, and Wagoner nine. Both teams started slow, with Bremen leading just 6-2 at the end of the first quarter. "We did not play that great offensively to start the game out as Bremen was really hawking Collin Czarnecki," Edison said following the slow start. "When the score is 6-2 at the end of the first quarter it is a battle of defense or it's a battl of finding yourself on the offensive end." Five different players hit the scoring column as LHS picked up the pace, taking a 14-13 halftime lead. "I thought we could have played a little harder at the beginning as an entire team but in the second quarter I thought we really picked it up," said Edison. "We had way too many turnovers and our intensity just was not where it needed to be." After a slow start offensively, LaVille outscored the Lions 28-24 and hit some key shots when needed. "The second half was a different story as we really played much better even though it was close throughout the entire game," explained Edison. "We had several key plays throughout the game that gave us a chance of winning. "I thought Ryan James and his hustle really helped us. Down the stretch Owen Smith had a couple really nice passes to Czarnecki. Noah Rush hit a huge 3-pointer for us as well as Ross Wagoner. Collin Allen had two huge tip backs off of missed free throws that allowed us to get the ball and have another chance at making some more free throws. This was a huge win for us as it is a down the road rival and we just needed to know what it's like to get a victory. I thought we played very well against Tippy Valley and just fell short. We need to use this win and build momentum going into this week against a couple of solid teams." Bremen did outscore LaVille in total field goals made, but the Lancers won the battle at the free throw line, 13-0, to pick up its first win of the season.
