LAKEVILLE, IN. - Sometimes a change of pace is a good thing. During the final regular season high school basketball game between LaVille and Lighthouse CPC, the pace of the game was more uptempo. The Lancers adjusted well in a 79-67 victory over the Lions at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. Coach Michael Edison's club has shown it can be as patient as the next team. During this first-ever meeting between Lighthouse and LaVille was a spectators delight as the teams combined for over 140 points. Both teams came in averaging right at or nearly 54 points per game. In the end, the ultimate payoff for LaVille was being able to take what the Lion defense was giving them. After the Lakeville guests scored the first bucket of the game on an alley-oop pass to Collin Czarnecki, Lighthouse CPC went on a 10-2 run to grab an early 10-4 lead. The Lancers, however, settled in and used baskets by Czarnecki, Lucas Plummer, Ross Wagoner and Michael Good to take the lead. The pace of the game proved to be the difference as Edison's team would go on an 17-5 run to increase its leads to 35-17. The Lancers were able to utilize a variety of players to score from a variety of ways to push the spread near 20 points. "I think this run was the key point in the game for us," Edison said of the offensive surge. "We were able to get some three-pointers and easy buckets and keep them from getting anything and that spread ended up being about the same as what it would be at the end of the game. "The tempo was very fast last night. Even though Lighthouse was patient at times they really got us playing quickly. There were times we could attack and get fast buckets and there were other times we needed to be patient. It was the most up-tempo game we have had all season. Our guys did a nice job adapting to the pace and playing quick when we needed to." Lighthouse CPC was able to get a little footing to start the second half by hitting three straight 3-pointers. But LHS went on another run to bump the gap up to 54-36. In the middle of an offensive burst, Good found himself with the ball on the right wing. Good penetrated in the lane just at the time the Lion defense split and Good finished with a two-handed flush to get the Cox Gym crowd rocking and keep the momentum firmly on the LaVille sidelines. The Lions tried to keep up, hitting treys in the fourth quarter, but the Lancers maintained the double-digit lead and finished off the win. Czarnecki led all scorers with 30 points, just one shy of his career high. The 6-foot-2 sophomore also added six rebounds and three assists to go with his five 3-pointers. Good had another solid night, scoring 19 points, hauling in six boards and two blocked shots. Smith scored a season-high 17 points and finished with a solid stat line - six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Plummer had six points and five rebounds, while Ryan James led the rebounding effort with nine boards, five points, three assists and two charges taken. "The game lent itself for a lot of opportunities to score," said Edison. "Collin, Michael, and Owen really took advantage of that. Collin shot the ball very well during certain stretches, Michael Good was able to get some much-needed baskets down low, and Owen got many of his baskets on fast break layups." LaVille improves to 14-9 overall and heads into the first game of the 2A Sectional #34 against Hebron on Tuesday, February 28. "(Lighthouse) was a very resilient team and never gave up and kept plugging away," concluded Edison of the Lions. "They had some very talented players. "We've been playing well lately, but a team is only as good as its next performance," Edison continued when asked about how he feels the team is playing going into the state tournament. "The guys have figured out their roles on the team and have been playing with a lot of confidence. We need to carry that over in the tournament time. We are looking forward to next week where we will have the opportunity to compete against a Hebron team who beat us earlier in the year." The 113th edition of Hoosier Hysteria tips off with a pair of games at North Judson-San Pierre High School. The 6:30 p.m. opener features Wheeler against the host Blue Jays. LaVille and Hebron are scheduled to start at approximately 8 p.m. ET. Winners will advance to the semifinal round on Friday, March 3.
