UNION MILLS, IN. - The softball team is set to participate in the 38th annual Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament. LaVille will participate in the 2A Sectional #35 at South Central High School in Union Mills. Joining the Lancers will be Bremen, Career Academy South Bend, Hebron, Wheeler and the host Satellites. Career Academy South Bend (0-8) lost a 21-1 decision to Bremen (12-12) in the single game on May 22. The Lions move into the semifinal round against Hebron on May 24 at 5 p.m. EDT. LaVille (2-15) will open the 2023 state tournament against South Central at 5 p.m. EDT on May 23. It will be a rematch of a regular season game on April 12 between the two non-conference opponents. The Satellites Sophomore Val Horne pitched the first game against the Lancers back on April 14, won by South Central, 12-0. Horne scattered five LaVille hits and finished with 12 strikeouts in picking up the win in the circle for South Central."We have had a lot of bumps in the road this season," said LaVille coach Cassie Rossman. "We had to pause our season for a few weeks due to injuries and allowing some girls to heal up. We currently have 9 players and that is what we're rolling with. I think with all the hardships we've endured this season as a team the girls have grown really close and have improved not only their athletic abilities but also their mental game. "We played South Central already this season so we are familiar with them," continued the LaVille coach. "We took a loss that game but walks and errors attributed to that as well as not going up to the plate with a game plan." Caitlyn Goffinet, Karisma Lewis and Olivia Markin lead the Lancer offense. Goffinet is hitting .457 heading into the state tournament. She is second on the team in extra base hits and tied for second in runs batted in. Lewis brings a .390 average and leads the team in extra base hits and RBI. Markin is at .385 at the plate and tied with Goffinet for second in RBIs. Markin leads the team in innings pitched. "The keys to success for us against South Central would be eliminating the errors we have in the field," concluded Rossman. "As well as the amount of walks our pitchers allow and having a tough hitters mentality at the plate. I think we have some really tough talent with Bremen and Hebron in our sectional so it will be fun to see how it plays out!"
