WABASH, IN. - Timely hits, aggressive base running and solid pitching were key factors as LaVille opened the Indiana High School Athletic Association 2A Sectional at Wabash. The Lancers put together a pair of runs in the third and fourth inning and held Wabash to one unearned run to pick up a 4-1 high school baseball victory. LaVille’s offense hacked away for nine hits off Wabash starter Andrew Dillon. At the top of the order, Lucas Plummer reached base twice and scored a pair of runs to set the table. Collin Czarnecki went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. The bottom of the Lancer batting order contributed five hits to help the cause. Ross Wagoner, Brayden Schwitz and Noah Rush all had singles, while #7 batter Alex Summers had two singles. “Colin Czarnecki had a great night at the plate with three hits and three RBI’s,” said LaVille coach Brian Lawler. “Alex Summers was big with two hits and got the two run inning started leading off with a single.” With the Lancers leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Czarnecki hit a run-scoring single to left. Lawler’s crew also swiped three bases and were aggressive, constantly looking to extra bases on extra throws and errors. “I thought the big difference was our base running,” Lawler explained. “Andrew Wolford made a great read and was able to score on a pass ball, and we were able to get a couple extra bases that allowed us to score.” Pitching was also a key component for LHS. Senior Konner Quinn tossed five innings, allowing two hits, three walks and 10 strikeouts to earn the win in the bump. Lucas Plummer came on for the final two innings to secure the win. Plummer struck out six to earn the save. "We got some great starting pitching from Konner Quinn going 5 innings and collecting 10 strikeouts," Lawler said when asked about the effort on the mound. "Lucas Plummer came in and kind of created his trouble with 3 walks in sixth but was able to get out of it." LaVille improves to 13-15 overall and will play Bremen in the first of two semifinals on May 27 at 1 p.m. The Lions defeated Pioneer 11-1 in the first quarterfinal to set up the rematch. Bremen defeated LHS 14-2 back on April 11 at Bremen. The Lions outhit LaVille and collected five extra base hits for the win on a sunny, 75-degree April day. "We have Bremen next, who got us pretty good early in the season," Lawler recalled about his upcoming opponent. "They are a good team and it will take one of our better games to advance." Rochester will meet Manchester in the second semifinal at the 2A Wabash Sectional. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 29 at Wabash High School.
