WISCONSIN DELLS, WI. - Now that high school basketball season is over and students gradually move into summer activities, it is the perfect opportunity to improve their game. With five seniors picking up their diplomas in early June, veteran LaVille basketball coach Michael Edison recently had the opportunity to take a group of returning players, along with new prospects to work on their game. It was the chance to play some competitive ball and have a little time to bond, as well. "The guys wanted to go somewhere over the summer to play some basketball," said the 16th-year LaVille skipper. "and have some team bonding time." According to coach Edison, he received some information in an email during the spring for a tournament at the Wisconsin Dells. Edison introduced the idea to the team to gauge interest. "It looked interesting," recalled Edison when asked about the summer opportunity. "and the guys were excited about going." Being around the game as a player and now as a coach, Edison understands that just as his team is working to improve their skills and overall game, other teams are doing the same. This summer idea was a great way for Edison and assistant coach Luke Hillegonds to get a look at a new group of LaVille basketball players and give them time to get closer together. "It was just fun for us to get away and play against some teams that we never see," explained Edison. "It was also a chance for us to have some fun and bond as a team." Teams from multiple states joined LaVille at the Wisconsin Dells for some hoops, some fellowship, some food and some fun. "We played three games," said Edison. "There were teams from seven different states. We played a team from Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois." Edison said that approximately 20 players went on the trip and they enjoyed getting the chance to hang out with the players. "I think they had a lot of fun and enjoyed hanging out with one another," Edison said when asked about what the coaches learned about this group. "It is hard to know for sure what exactly we learned, but we did find out that there is good competition all around the United States. I always enjoy getting to hang out and get to know my players away from the game of basketball. This mini trip allowed me to have that opportunity." As our time closed, we asked what Edison feels like he learned about his upcoming version of Lancer Basketball. "It will be different from last year's team," concluded the Lancer coach. "and we will have to figure out what strength each individual basketball player possesses in the coming months." For now, a few days away with many team essentials provide valuable team building opportunities that will strengthen the bonds between players and coaches. Trips like the one to Wisconsin Dells often create life-long friendships and memories this group of LaVille basketball will cherish.
