WALKERTON - LaVille Volleyball continued a busy week by renewing its rivalry with John Glenn High School. And, for the second consecutive night the Lancers battled another opponent going into the fifth set before falling 3-2 to the Falcons. "Another incredible matchup!" exclaimed LaVille head coach Pat Gring. After winning the first set 25-23, LHS dropped the next two to John Glenn, before rallying for a fourth set victory, 25-19, to force a fifth set. In the final set, the Falcons outscored the Lakeville visitors 15-9 to earn the non-conference win. Despite losing the second straight five-set match, Gring feels like her squad is playing well. "The team is doing so well!" explained Gring. "The matches haven’t ended the way we had hoped but the communication, coverage and level of play is just outstanding. If we are falling short, it’s in the mental game . . . they really want that win and that gets in their head a bit, their play gets a bit rushed and mistakes happen. We are working all the time to play confidently with calm and focus. I know they’re going to get there because I see the efforts in all the little changes they make to correct and improve their positions." "I’m guessing they’re a bit tired, two nights in a row we haven’t returned to school until 10:00 p.m. – I’m tired! But they’d be the first to eliminate any excuses; they are there to play hard and to win and that’s exactly the way they step on the court." With several players in the statistical column, there is no doubt that there are many contributions. "I don’t know that at this point I could single out just a few players," Gring said when asked who she felt were pleasant surprises with their play. "Each has done some amazing and surprising things that have been great to watch!" Elaina Borton and Kate Aschenbrenner combined for 28 assists. Ava Fuchs and Cailtyn Goffinet collected nine kills each, and the trio of Borton, Lily Smith, and Moriah Richhart had nearly 50 digs together. In the JV match, John Glenn defeated LaVille, 2-1. After a couple tough losses on the scoreboard, Gring still feels the wins are on the horizon. "I tell them I’m proud of them, and I am!" said the Lancer coach. "I see what they are doing, I see how hard they’re working, I see and appreciate their positive attitudes and strong team bond so I am completely confident the wins will come." LaVille continues a busy week with its third straight match of the week against Bethany Christian on August 17. "Bethany Christian has always been a worthy opponent," Gring said about the Bruins. "We had a 5 set match with them last year that didn’t end in our favor, but tonight we’re at home so it’s a great time to capture the win!" The junior varsity is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. first serve. The varsity match will follow.
