LAKEVILLE - The LaVille basketball team returned to action Tuesday as USA Preseason #17 Westview came to town for just the second time since 1985. Coach Chandler Prible brought a tradition-rich club into this non-conference game having won the last three IHSAA Sectional titles, including 14 Sectional crowns since 2000. Both teams battled during the first quarter as the chess match began between Prible and Lancer coach Michael Edison. In the end, the Warriors made the best moves in catergories like 'points in the paint' (26-16) and from 'beyond the 3-point arc' (33% to 11%) as LaVille fell 61-33 to the Warriors at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. "Well, Westview was a very good passing and shooting team (Tuesday night)," said coach Edison after the game. "We had a lot more turnovers than they did and we only hit 2 3-pointers the entire game. The biggest difference in the first quarter, even though we kept it close, is that they knocked down shots and we did not. If we would have shot better it would have made a little bit of a difference, but Westview was a very solid team in all aspects of the game, one of the best we will play this year." Westview's Austin Schlabach led all scorers with 21 points, including 12 in the first half. Schlabach, along with Daniel Yoder, Kaden Grau, and Pierce Yoder combined for those 46 points to outdistance the Lancers. "We may not play against a better passing team than Westview," explained the 18th year veteran coach. "They have several of their guys that are very high level passers. They also did not hurt themselves as they were able to take care of the ball and get high percentage shots. In speaking with their coach before the game, Chandler told me that this was one of his best shooting teams he has ever had. By the end of the game I could absolutely see where he was coming from with that observation." Edison's club just couldn't get on track from the field, making just 2-of-19 from 3s, throughout a half-court Westview pressure defense that didn't allow many open looks. "I thought there were some good things that we did (get) throughout the game, but unfortunately some of those things did not translate into points on the scoreboard," said the Lancer boss. "Ryan Maenhout took 3 charges throughout the game, we had different possessions where we were able to work the ball and get good looks, and we had spurts where we played some good defense. Overall, we need to continue to work on our 1 on 1 defense and close-outs, challenging the shooter." LHS was led by Lance Edison with 14 points and four rebounds. Andre Gonzales had eight points and four rebounds in his first game, while Braedyn Foster chipped in with six points five boards, a steal, and an assist. LaVille moves to 1-1 overall and will open Indiana Northern State Conference play on December 5 at John Glenn. The JV is scheduled to tip at 6pm, with the varsity to follow.
