WALKERTON - Entering Friday's high school basketball game between LaVille and John Glenn in Walkerton, there was a little more on the line. Toss the records out, any rankings, and buckle up for rivalry, and conference, hoops. Coach Michael Edison's club turned in a solid defense performance in the second half, holding the Falcons in check for a hard-earned 47-35 conference victory at everwise Gymnasium. The gym was set up for excitement following a JV game that was decided by three points as the Lancers rallied from a 14 point halftime deficit for a 40-37 win. With the John Glenn pep band playing and the crowd cheering, both teams were well represented by their communities. "It was a fun atmosphere here at Glenn," said Edison after watching his team improve to 2-1 overall and start the season 1-0 in the Indiana Northern State Conference. "A loud crowd and an exciting atmosphere really got things going." After a physical, defensive first half, LaVille took a 19-14 lead into the locker room. Edison's club, however, was able to fight off a valiant effort by coach John Dupont's Falcon team that prompted Edison to praise what the second-year John Glenn coach is doing. "They really battle," said Edison. "I was here for the Plymouth game and they just don't give up. "Coach (John) Dupont has them playing, I think, really well. Their shooters didn't necessarily knock down some shots, but Jude Nicks is a tough one to stop. He can shoot from the outside, from the free throw line, he battles on the boards." The 18th-year LaVille coach was also proud of what his crew did in its first road test of the young season. "I was really pleased with our defensive rotations," noted the Lancer boss. "Challenging for the ball, hustling after loose balls, and doing a good job on the boards. When it's a loud crowd and atmosphere and the tides turn and they score 5-6 straight points it's easy to lose your composure. I thought our guys just took care of things. It's a big win for us. Conference game, down the road rival. "I thought Braedyn Foster did a really nice job on Nicks, we had Travis (Madondo) and Andre (Gonzales) out front that got some deflections, Lance (Edison) got some finishes for us. And multiple other guys. Ryan Maenhout I think he played a really great game ... head on a swivel, just aware of everything, getting rebounds. I see that ball go up and all I see is Ryan just flying through the air like (LaVille graduate) Michael Good or something. I also thought that during our rotations and when they got the ball down low, we were on them quickly and nice and tight. I felt we just made them earn it. They missed a lot of shots where we just had good chest and good position, so I really liked that and the way we attacked rebounds. Jude Dupont kept John Glenn battling all night, finishing with 18 points. Lance Edison led all scorers with 24 points and four assists. Gonzales had 8 points and four rebounds, and Foster battled in the paint for 7 points and 9 boards. "This was a big win for us," closed coach Edison. "Big rivalry win, and a big conference win on the road. "It was fun to watch. I was proud of the way our guys battled too." LHS improves to 2-1 overall and will travel to Argos on December 9. John Glenn moves to 0-3 overall and will play host to West Central on the same night.
