NORTH JUDSON - The LaVille basketball team may not have been clean and crisp, but played very determined in a 66-65 overtime victory over North Judson-San Pierre. Coach Michael Edison's Lancers forced three straight turnovers in the final minute of overtime and benefitted from a free throw by Lance Edison to snap a two-game losing streak. "I didn't think we played particularly well in regards to taking care of the ball," said coach Edison after the game. "We had way too many turnovers and broke down multiple times on the defensive end. "We did play with a lot of grit and came up with a lot of big plays throughout the game. There were times we executed extremely well and other times that we looked like we needed to sharpen up quite a bit." LaVille held a 56-53 lead late in the fourth quarter when Javen Christensen swished a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. In the OT, the Blue Jays led 65-61, but Edison's club possessed the basketball. As the clock ticked below one minute, Liam Amor found Braedyn Foster in the low post, who split a pair of Judson defenders and banked in a short jumper to narrow the gap to 65-63 with 31.1 seconds left in OT. Following a timeout, LHS put on its full court press that forced NJSP into a crucial turnover. Amor missed a pair of free throws, but Ryan Maenhout grabbed the rebound for a put back to tie the game at 65-all. On the ensuing inbound, the LHS defense forced another turnover, setting up Lance Edison's game-winning free throw. "At the end of the game, I reflected, and even though we didn't play that well, it still felt good to win the game and have the victory," explained the LaVille coach. "We still have certain habits that we need to improve upon, but getting a hard fought victory was really nice leading in to Christmas break. "In a way it felt like it was definitely Christmas time as both teams just seemed to be in the spirit of giving. Both of us had more than our fair share of turnovers. I felt like we gave the game away, and then they returned the favor and gave it back to us." Lance Edison led all scorers with 31 points, his second 30+ point game of the season, to go with 7 rebounds and a couple of steals. Foster added 12 big points and coralled 9 boards and 2 steals. Maenhout, Andre Gonzales, and Jonny Yoder chipped in with 7 points each. Maenhout led the Lancer sniper attack with 6 steals, while Gonzales had three assists. "Even though we didn't play that well we were very resilient and didn't give up," closed the LaVille skipper. "It is tough giving up a double digit lead and then still having the resiliency to fight back after getting down four points with under a minute to go. Our guys just found a way to win." LaVille, now 4-3 overall, will head to the Wawasee Tournament on January 2 and 3. The Lancers open play against a much-improved South Central (Union Mills) team that is off to a 5-2 start.
