Basketball Finishes Runner-Up At Wawasee Tournament

SYRACUSE – After both LaVille and Wawasee finished unbeaten in pool play at the Wawasee Tournament, Saturday night’s title game was a fitting way to end the two-day event. The Lancers and Warriors battled back and forth throughout before needing overtime, before Wawasee nipped LaVille 39-37 for the championship. Veteran coaches Michael Edison of LaVille and Joe Luce of Wawasee were caught playing chess as each possession was vital. Patients on offense to go with outstanding defense was highlighted throughout as each team looked for the best execution. Lance Edison led the Lancers with 16 points, Andre Gonzales had 8, and Ryan Maenhout chipped in with 6 for LHS. Edison and Gonzales were both named to the All-Tournament team. Edison’s club moves to 7-4 overall and will travel to 1A #4 Triton on January 6. The junior varsity game is scheduled for a 6pm tip, with the varsity to follow. Lancers sweep through pool play games LaVille used a patient offense and timely free throws down the stretch to pull away from South Central (Union Mills) 60-51 in the first round of the Wawasee High School basketball tournament. The two teams battled throughout the first half and into the third quarter when the Lancers turned a five-point deficit into a four-point lead. “We got to the point where we just became a little more patient with more cutters and got into a better rhythm,” said LaVille coach Michael Edison. “We also were getting some nice contributions from some other guys.” LHS outscored the Satellites 18-11 in the third period to take a 45-41 lead. Offensive patience was key in the fourth period as the Lancers began to work the clock and convert from the free-throw line. Edison’s club converted 11 of 14 free throws to secure the victory. “We did a solid job from the free throw line,” Edison noted after watching his team finish 16 of 20 for the game. “This was our best victory of the season so far, and people might not realize that.” Lance Edison led all scorers with 23 points. Andre Gonzales LaVille continued pool play in the second round of the Wawasee Tournament on January 2. The Lancers used a quick start, and every player scored in a 58-39 victory over Victory Prep of Indianapolis. Coach Michael Edison’s crew controlled the boards, forced 20+ turnovers, and came up with 12 steals to improve to 2-0 at the end of the first day of the two-day tournament. Lancer guard Andre Gonzales led all scorers with 17 points. Lance Edison had 16 points, and Liam Amor added 10 as LHS put three players in double-figures. LaVille finished off the final pool play game in dominating fashion, beating South Newton 58-40 at the Wawasee Tournament. LaVille placed three players in double figures, led by junior Lance Edison with 21 points, Andre Gonzales had 19, and freshman Liam Amor added 10 points for LHS. The Lancers advance to Saturday’s championship game against the host Warriors. Both teams enter the tournament finals with identical 6-3 records.
