Basketball Falls At #4 Triton In OT

BOURBON - The historical data is proof that the LaVille-Triton high school basketball series is one of the best small-school showdowns. In this series, you can throw out the records, and throw out the rankings because this game will very likely be a battle to the end. There are still bragging rights since the two locals are now in different conferences, and still intriguing due to the total amount of games decided by six points or less. Better still, the games that have been decided by one possession over the years. Tuesday night would be no different at the 76th edition tipped off in the Trojan Trench Gymnasium at Triton High School. Neither team shot the ball very well. Nor did they take care of the ball. Nonetheless, it still came down to the wire as the 1A #4 Trojans converted a couple more shots to escape with a 42-37 overtime victory over the Lancers in a non-conference nail-biter. "We really wanted to do our best to limit our turnovers and get good possessions," said LaVille coach Michael Edison. "We did a decent job for stretches of the game, especially in the 1st half. In the 2nd half we had a stretch where we had 6 turnovers in 7 possessions. It was not a good series for us offensively to say the least. With Triton having so much talent and fire power we really wanted to just do our best to stay with them 1 period at a time." The first half went back and forth, with Triton leading by one point at the end of the first quarter. LaVille outscored the Trojans 14-10 to take a 20-17 lead into the intermission. Coach Jason Groves' club started the second half with half-court pressure defense that forced the Lakeville guests into six turnovers in seven possessions. The Trojans were able to turn half those miscues into transition points to take the lead. A pair of short fourth quarter runs kept the action intense. Triton started things off with a 9-2 spurt to grab a 35-29 lead with about 5:30 left. LHS then scored the next six points as the clock went under two minutes left in regulation. Both teams had a shot to take the lead, but Lance Edison missed a layup for LHS and Triton's Julian Swanson missed a 3-pointer as the clock ticked down to zero to send the game into its first overtime session in the 76-game history. LaVille took its only lead in the overtime session when Lance Edison canned a pair of free throws to make it 37-36, but the Trojans converted a sudden-change play to put Triton up for good. Jamison Swanson made a crucial steal that brother Julian Swanson turned into a short jumper for a 38-37 lead with just under 40-seconds left. LaVille made two costly turnovers in the final seconds and Triton was able to sink free throws for the final outcome. "We did some good things to be able to stay in the game against a very solid team, but situationally we made some errors at key points in the game down the stretch," said the Lancer skipper. "We had several easy shots that we missed and we turned the ball over on a couple of possessions that proved to be killers." Lance Edison led LaVille with 15 points, while Ryan Maenhout added a career-high 10 points. The 6'2" forward added to his stat line with 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Brady Wood led all scorers with 16 points, while Gage Riffle added three big treys for Triton. "Our guys did a solid job at rebounding and making Triton earn what they got for a good portion of the game," closed coach Edison. "If we could have shored up a few plays down the stretch we would have been in a better position to pull off an upset." LaVille moves to 7-5 overall and will jump back into Indiana Northern State Conference play January 9 at Knox. The junior varsity game is scheduled for a 6pm tip. The varsity will follow.
