PLYMOUTH - For the second consecutive season, LaVille's Alyvia Wickizer is headed to the IHSAA girls wrestling regional. The Plymouth Regional is scheduled for January 10, with a 9am start at Plymouth High School. Wickizer, who will compete as the #2 from the Plymouth Sectional from a week ago, is set to face Olea Guadalupe of Hammond Bishop Noll shortly after 9am Saturday. A first round victory against the 10-2 Guadalupe would mean the winner between Goshen 110# Sectional Champion Oneca Gradeless (29-3) of NorthWood and Ashley Debusk (23-9) from Hobart in the right to be a state qualifier. "It means a lot to be a part of this for so long and qualify for two years in a row," said Wickizer of her second straight regional opportunity. "I just got to be in the game. I've got to realize that this could be my last chance ever to advance. I just gotta grind." Wickizer admitted that she has to be in the moment and ready to go from the first round. "It takes a lot," explained the senior. "It is 110% a mind game and you've just got to love the sport to do it. I know I have to be ready my first match. I think I can do it. I've been wrestling for 13 years now and I have the technical skills to be able to do what I can." When asked what has been her biggest improvement over the last year, Alyvia said, "Definitely shooting. Last year I didn't shoot a lot and I've improved on that a lot." As a junior, Alyvia was eliminated from the state tournament by Joanna Cantu of Hobart in the first match of the regional. "I want to thank my coaches," closed Wickizer. "They are the main reason I am here and the main reason I am accomplishing my goal since I have had since I was a little girl." Saturday, Alyvia wants to make the best of her opportunity while continuing to accomplish her ultimate goal. Go get 'em, Alyvia!
