MISHAWAKA - After competing in the Michiana West Conference bowling championships prior to Christmas, the LaVille High School Bowling team is set to compete in the sectional round. The LaVille boys finished second overall to Penn in the MWC Conference Championships, while the girls posted a best-ever fourth place. Lancer coach Kevin Kubsch knows the boys were just that close to being conference champs and smiling from ear to ear following the gals effort. "Man, just so proud of the girls," exclaimed Kubsch. "Let's just talk about the ladies first. We have had so many girls that are first time bowlers improve so much. They have shown by their final conference standing where we think this group can go. We think we are in the conversation of girls teams advancing to the next level. "We start with kids like Sydney Horner and Syra McCallum, I tease Sydney a lot about her just coming to LaVille Bowling as a senior. She has done an amazing job. Syra is also in her first year and her improvement has been tremendous. Those two young ladies have been huge for us." On the guys side, sophomore Ryan Carmichael is not only known by PBA summer work, but has is the leading bowler for average so far this season. "Ryan has accomplished a lot from the end of last season through the off season," noted Kubsch of the defending state runner-up. "He continues to sharpen his skills as he continues to land in the top tier at tournaments." Key contributions have also come from Bobby Bzezinski and Jackson Powers. "Bobby has really been key in our lead-off spot and Jackson Powers has done well," said Kubsch. "Both of those guys and our lone senior Neil Patrich have performed very well." When asked about a crucial part for the LaVille Bowling team, Kubsch simply says "Spares and the alley pattern.""That is the key component. We tell our kids to 'fill the frame'. Strikes will come. Do what we can to fill out that frame. We also talk about understanding the oil pattern. Reading the lanes is also important. It's our job as coaches, to tell them how to read the pattern. Then we may have to slow down or pick up ball speed." The team sectional will begin at 2pm for the gals and then the guys will follow on Saturday. Then Sunday, the individual portion will take place. According to Kubsch, LaVille feels like it has a chance to be among the top 5 teams to advance to the regional round.
