LAKEVILLE - Saturday night might not have been the best first half the LaVille boys basketball has played this year. It had been a week since the Lancers competed in a regular season game - a 53-42 conference win at Knox on January 9. The January 17 game was going to be a little special. It was a girl-boy doubleheader and Winter Homecoming in front of Lancer Nation at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. For LaVille, a sluggish offensive start and just enough putting the ball in the hoop by the Elkhart Christian Academy Eagles, put LHS behind by double digits. That all changed in the second half as coach Michael Edison's club started to convert, while holding the Eagles to just 28 percent shooting to rally for a 48-32 homecourt victory. "I felt Elkhart Christian outplayed us in the first half," Edison said when asked about the start of the game. "They were quick to the ball, they crashed the boards hard, and they got a lot of deflections and steals. They played with a lot more energy." The second half was a totally different story for the Lancers. When the hosts hit the court, the energy was different. The passes were sharper and they played with more purpose. Edison's crew knew they were not going to get back a 14-point deficit all at once. So, the Lancers started one possession at a time. LaVille went on a 23-6 run to take a five point lead at the end of the third quarter. ECA got as close as 37-30 with 4:25 left in the fourth period, but Edison's crew went on a 11-2 burst for the final margin. "We pressed a little and that helped out some," coach Edison said when asked how LaVille addressed the disadvantage. "We were also able to knock down some shots, but I felt we played with a lot more positive energy in the second half. I felt our guys were focused and ready to go in the second half." Leading the way in the paint was the duo of Ryan Maenhout and Braedyn Foster. Maenhout filled his stat line with nine points, seven boards, two blocked shots, and a charge taken. Foster added a couple key buckets to go with nine rebounds. "Maenhout and Foster played very well for us," said the Lancer skipper. "Ryan took a big charge, they both had a lot of good rebounds, and they finished well for us. It was a solid effort by our post players." LaVille improved to 9-5 overall and are set to open a busy week of everwise Bi-County basketball with a rematch against rival Triton. This will be the seventh time Triton and LaVille meet in the Bi-County tournament during Edison's tenure, including four times in the first round. Now, the big question is, what will come from the LaVille team that fought back to turn a 14-point deficit into a 16-point victory?
