LAKEVILLE - LaVille basketball coach Michael Edison knew what he wanted as his club prepped for New Prairie in Friday's everwise Bi-County consolation game. The Lancers used a crucial 16-1 run to pull away for a 56-46 victory. Both the Lancers and Cougars lost in two quarterfinal openers Tuesday - LHS a 66-45 decision to 1A #9 Triton 66-45, while 2A #7 Bremen nipped New Prairie 52-49. Those setbacks pushed both LaVille and the Cougars into the consolation bracket. During our GAMEDAY discussion, Edison not only wanted his team to come out and take , but wanted his club to get off to a good start. "New Prairie has an extremely tough schedule," Edison said a day before the encounter. "They played Bremen very tough and only lost by three points. They've got a couple of nice younger players that have been fitting well into their system since the Wiggins kid went down with a knee injury. They run some very nice offensive sets and play very well together. They will be a tough opponent for us tonight." The two teams battled early in Friday's game with LaVille taking a 13-8 lead on a pair of free throws by Ryan Maenhout as the first quarter closed. Back and forth the game continued in the second quarter as the spread never got larger than two possessions. Edison's club used a balanced offense with Andre Gonzales, Lance Edison, Braedyn Foster, and Maenhout kept LHS in front. New Prairie was led by Jagger Daniels and Hunter Nelson as the teams went to intermission with a Lancer 25-21 advantage. More of the same through much of the third quarter. Edison and Caleb Skiles from long range for LaVille, while Daniels and Nelson kept New Prairie within striking distance. That is until the closing two minutes of the third and to start the fourth. Lance Edison and Skiles hit big shots as LaVille went on a 16-1 burst to shift momentum and take control. "I thought we shot the ball very well and took care of the ball, which gave us the opportunity to win the game," said coach Edison. "New Prairie was a tough opponent, and I was very pleased with the way our guys came out in the auxiliary gym and played hard and took it very seriously." We asked Edison about that game-changing run by his squad. "Caleb had a couple of nice three-pointers and Lance did some good things as well," closed the Lancer coach. "Overall, I was very pleased with the way our entire team played. That game could've gone either way if we would not have had the right focus." Lancer leading scorer Lance Edison led all scorers with 28 points, including 16 in the second half. Gonzales added 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Foster also chipped in with seven boards. LaVille won its third game in the last four and improved to 10-6 overall. The Lancers return to Cox Gym on January 27 against Career Academy South Bend. The junior varsity is scheduled to start at 6pm, with the varsity to follow.
