Girls Soccer Maintains Focus In Win Over Mishawaka

LAKEVILLE - Prior to Tuesday's home match against Mishawaka, LaVille coach Brandon Shafer warned his team to stay focused following Saturday's invitational victory. The Lancers participated in the Manchester Invitational and defeated Logansport and the host Spartans to capture the tournament trophy.  The latter match ended with LaVille winning 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout. "Our effort was really the difference tonight," Shafer said after watching his team pick up a 4-2 victory over the Cavemen on Tuesday.  "We are riding a little high off the (Manchester) tourmanent win.  I warned them tonight that the big let down can happen in those times and they responded perfectly. We still have not put together a perfect game, probably never will, but we keep working hard and doing enough to win these games."  Junior Mackena Deason got the home team on the scoreboard first, when freshman Macie Edwards found Deason in the right spot. Deason settled the pass and placed her shot into the net, giving the Lakeville hosts a 1-0 lead. With the defense holding their own on both sides of the ball, LaVille took a 1-0 margin into halftime. "We move the ball really well when we want to, when we do we look really, really good," said Shafer.  "I told them at halftime that the first 10 or 15 minutes of the game was some of the best high school soccer that I've seen in high school period, not in boys, not in girls . When we pass the ball and we move and find each other we look really, really dangerous. We just got to keep that for 80 minutes and not just in 10 or 15 minute spurts." As the second half got under way, the Lancers took advantage of an opportunity near the net, as Lancer junior Mikalah Kuskye broke free for her fifth goal of the season and Shafer's club widened the advantage for a 2-0 gap. Following tough defense by both squads, the final 21 minutes had some exciting moments before a late goal sealed the deal. Mishawaka closed the gap to 2-1 when she found the net at the 59th minute mark. Deason then scored her second goal of the match to flip the LaVille lead back to two goals at 3-1 with 10 minutes remainig. The Cavemen stayed close with a goal at the 74th minute when it looked like the Lancers would clear the ball.  A header, then a pair of LHS players tried to clear the ball, but Mishawaka's Millie Mammolenti poked the ball into the goal and it trimmed the margin to 3-2 with six minutes left. As the clocked wound down to under three minutes, LaVille put a corner kick in play from Kuskye out of the east end of the field and LaVille senior London Kwiatkowski out jumped the Mishawaka keeper for the game-winner.  Kwiatkowski got just enough of a header to give Shafer's crew a 4-2 victory. "You love it when your team just battles all the way to the end," Shafer said following the match.  "That is what we had to do.  Every time we got a little lead, we got a jump on them, they came back on us. We finished strong when we got that last one just to give us that cushion." As Deason and Kwiatkowski found the net, that's good news according to Shafer. "We want to keep seeing Mackena attacking. She can keep finding the back of the net.  She got a couple of goals tonight.  And as she continues to score, that goal is going to keep getting bigger and bigger for her. We've relied a lot on Mikalah (Kuskye) to put the ball in the net and its nice to see Mackena and other players step in and do that." Shafer was also proud of the way the Lancer defense played against the Cavemen and so far to start the season. "Our defense has really been very solid," noted Shafer.  "Our goal keepers haven't had to do a lot of work which is what you want. The shots we've given up have not been good shots.  We've got to continue to pressure the ball early, don't allow them any open shots. Defense has held really strong and we've not given up a lot of shots all season." With the graduation of Heaylyn Kwiatkowski in goal, Shafer and assistant Angie Dunlap have tried to give both goalies playing time. "Denni (Markin) and Kelsi (Andert) both, we just keep bouncing around back there (in goal) trying to get game experience for both of them," noted Shafer.  "You never know as the season goes on which one we need to sub in for, the other is going to be ready to go. I really appreciate their attitudes toward the situation. We are just trying to get both keepers ready for the post season." LaVille improves to 4-1 overall and returns to the pitch on August 31 against Plymouth.  The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Newton Park.   LAVILLE 4, MISHAWAKA 2 At Newton Park, Lakeville Score By Halves Mishawaka 0 2 - 2 LaVille 1 3 - 4 Scoring Summary LV - Mackena Deason (Macie Edwards), 5th minute LV - Mikalah Kuskye, 41st M - Genna Bultnick, 59th LV - Deason, 70th M - Millie Mammolenti, 74th LV - London Kwiatkowski (Kuskye), 78th Shots On Goal: Mishawaka 9, LaVille 16 Corner Kicks: Mishawaka 3, LaVille 3 Goalie Saves: Mishawaka 12, LaVille (Denni Markin) 6
