Girls Soccer Continues To Build In Win Over Plymouth

LAKEVILLE - LaVille girls head soccer coach Brandon Shafer wants his team to continue to build. The Lancers took another step in the growing process as LHS defeated rival Plymouth 3-1 at Newton Park. Shafer's squad scored first as London Kwiatkowski got a steal just inside midfield. She passed the ball up to Mikalah Kuskye, who sent a quick one-touch pass to Mackena Deason. The junior forward charged the goal and zipped a shot past the oncoming goalie for a 1-0 LaVille lead. The score remained 1-0 until the start of the second half. "I told them I felt there was something a little different in the mirror," Shafer said when asked about how he felt his team came out for the match. "I don't know if we were riding this winning streak. I was worried we were going to come out a little flat. We didn't, which is good and they came out with the same intensity they have. We were hoping to knock in an early goal and we got that." As the final minute ticked down before halftime, LaVille would find the net following a foul on Plymouth. Kuskye stepped in to take free kick from about 25-feet and successfully placed the ball just under the crossbar and out of the reach of the Pilgrim goalie for a 2-0 lead going into the break. Each team did a nice job defending the goal for a good 17-minute stretch before the Pilgrim offense took advantage of a Lancer fould. Plymouth quickly pushed the ball up near the penalty box when Alivia Kizer let fly with a long distance shot that found the net over the outreached jump of LaVille goalie Denni Markin to narrow the Lancer lead to 2-1 in the 57th minute. "It seemed like everytime we got something together, Plymouth was right there to push us back," noted Shafer. "The goal Plymouth scored from 40 feet away like that goes over the keeper's hands, you tip your cap and say nice shot. That's the only really good shot we gave up so I'm very happy with the way the defense is playing and the goalkeeper is playing well." LaVille continued to push and wanted one more to secure the victory. Following a throw-in near midfield, London Kwiatkowski kicked the ball up the right side of the penalty box, where Kuskye outhustled the Plymouth defense to the ball. The talented midfielder pushed the ball just in front of herself to get a little closer to the goal. As the Pilgrim goalie tried to dive for the ball, Kuskye punched her shot into the goal to halt any hopes of a late-match comeback. "We are still building and we want to keep on building," explained Shafer. "We've got some really tough games coming on the schedule. We've got Elkhart and Trinity and Argos so we are not even close to being where we want to be. There are going to be bumps along the way, so as long as we can keep building and keep learning, October is what we are looking at." The Lancers improved to 5-1 overall and will play host to North Miami on September 6. The match is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Newton Park. The season is young and Shafer's club has several tough matches upcoming - Elkhart (Sept. 9), Trinity (Sept 12), Argos (Sept. 14), Culver Community (Sept. 20) and rival John Glenn (Sept. 23). They must also stay focused against North Miami, LaPortge, Logansport, West Noble, and South Bend Riley. Logansport is rematch from the Aug. 26 Manchester Invitational where the Lancers came up with a 2-0 win over the Berries in the first round. When asked about the Plymouth-LaVille rivalry, Shafer said, "Any time you play somebody from 10 miles away from you is going to be a rivalry, I guarantee you. Some of these kids know each other from travel. The more rivalry games we can get the better. It brings out the intensity, it brings out the fun in the game." Over the last nine matches, Plymouth has won four, LaVille three, and there have been two ties.
