LAKEVILLE – Coaches always like seeing their team battle back from a deficit. LaVille suffered through a cold shooting first half, and hot shooting South Bend Washington team to make it close. The Panthers hit nine second half 3-pointers, including five by Terrance McKinnon as coach Maurice Scott Jr. club edged LaVille 63-60 in high school basketball. McKinnon finished with 9 triples and led all scorers with 30 points, while teammate Mike Stuckey added 15 points, including four treys for the Panthers. During the frigid shooting woes of the first half where LHS shot just 2 of 18 (11%) from 3-point territory, the Lancers could have folded, but fought valiantly on defense and on the boards to keep things close. Coach Michael Edison's club fought to tie the halftime score at 22-22 and then kept pace with Washington through three quarters - tied at 38-all - to enter the final quarter. Both teams heated up in a thrilling fourth quarter as the teams battled back and forth in scoring a combined 47 points. Lance Edison led three players in double figures with 24 points. Andre Gonzales had 14 and Liam Amor 12 for LHS. Ryan Maenhout and Braedyn Foster played big on the boards – Maenhout hauled down 14 rebounds, while Foster grabbed 12. "It was a game we could've gotten if we would've been a little more selective with our shots and taken care of the ball a little better," said the LaVille coach. "I figured out really quickly that McKinnon, number 10, was the player who had not been in their lineup for the last couple of months. With him having 30 points that really hurt us as well. They got an eight point lead in the fourth quarter and we didn't give up and battled back and tied the game up. A lot of credit goes to our guys for not giving up and finding a way to battle back. "It's super tough to win games when we shoot so poorly. For us to keep the game that close and shoot 15% from three point range is pretty remarkable." LaVille moves to 14-9 overall and will travel to Plymouth February 27. The junior varsity game is scheduled for a 615pm tip, with the varsity to follow.
