Lakeville - Senior night is always special. But for the LaVille volleyball senior class, the Hoosier North match against Culver Community Wednesday may end up near the top of most memorable matches. The Lancers trailed in each of three sets before rallying for an impressive 3-0 victory over the Cavaliers at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. Trailing late in the first set, 22-19, LHS ran off the final six points to pick up the 25-22 victory. Senior Ava Fuchs, classmate Elaina Borton and fellow senior Lily Smith had kills to close out the set. In the second set, the Cavaliers jumped to leads of 5-1 and 13-5 before a 6-0 burst narrowed LaVille deficit to 13-11. The Cavaliers tacked on a couple more points led by the net play of Brynn Berndt to increase the gap to 15-11, but some fine serving and strong net play from the Lancers pushed the Lakeville hosts into the lead. "We had great serving and we also had some great kills," LaVille coach Pat Gring said when asked about the second set rally. "The people that have struggled, you know, the kind that kind of break even with the kills, they were just knocking it out of the park tonight. I think once they got that energy back, they just kept going after it." Culver and LaVille played the remainder of the second set close, but the Lancers were able to pull away with a 25-20 win. As the third set got going, Ashley Pugh timed her jump just right to record a 'quick' to surprise the Lancer defense. Avery Garland and Berndt also got the net game off right for CCHS with some power to take a 5-1 lead. But another rally thanks in part to hustling defense, timely serves, and a bit of their own net attack, LaVille grabbed an 8-5 lead. Fuchs, Borton, and Caitlyn Goffinet all had a hand in scoring points, while the defense was picking up different areas of the court to keep balls alive. "You know what, I will never believe the girls again because they tell me that they can't see the ball or it's too fast," said Gring. "They were right on it." Midway through the final set, Gring's club went on another surge, upping the ante to 16-7 before pulling away for a 25-11 triumph and winning the match, 3-0. Reagan Bollenbacher was credited with the final kill, finessing the ball over the net and off a Culver defender. "It was fantastic," said Gring. "I'm so happy. But it also shows me everything that they can do. They can do this every single time they are out on the court. I've told them that if you are not doing it I'm frustrated because I know that you can do it. They put it all together tonight. And Culver is a very good opponent to us. They really worked it over tonight." According to Gring, the Senior Night victory was due to several key factors. "I have to say the difference tonight was the energy and the communication," explained Gring. "And I would probably have to say that no team wants to lose on Senior Night. They proved tonight that they were going to do everything they could to stay in this game. "Our crowd was great tonight. We had a great student section behind us. The whole atmosphere was just fantastic. Senior Night is a great night for this. They all just brought it right to the court." LaVille preps for the Caston Invitational September 30. The Lancers open play against North White (6-12) at 9:30 a.m. then meets Elwood (3-13) around 11:30 a.m. In the opposite bracket will be 1A #8 Faith Christian (21-2), Hoosier North rival Caston (20-5), and Oregon-Davis (1-13). The championship and consolation will be played following pool play. "We are going to have to work on keeping that energy and communication," concluded Gring. "We can't treat any other game better than what we did in tonight's game. It may not have the senior theme behind it. We've shown just how good we can play - individually and as a team, we have to do that on every single game remaining."
