WALKERTON - The 2A #7 LaVille football team steps away from conference action for the first time in five weeks. On Friday, September 29, the Lancers will travel a short trek west down US 6 to John Glenn High School to renew its backyard rivalry with the Falcons. Kick is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at John Hostrawser Field. And for the first time since the 2014 season both teams enter the contest with a winning record. But just like always, you can throw out the records and throw out the rankings because those don't matter when these two collide on the gridiron. "This is a classic backyard brawl game that will be one that will allow for the winner to have bragging rights for a year," said LaVille head football coach Jeff Kaiser. "Everyone knows each other which always makes it challenging and fun. Should be a solid matchup to say the least. John Glenn is a much improved team than the last couple years. They bring some size and a tremendous amount of speed. They are believing in what they do and there will be another battle on Friday night." After starting the season 5-0, LaVille lost its first game of the season in a 21-13 collision against 3A #12 Knox last week. Lucas Plummer was 14-of-25 for 154 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 18 times for 96 yards as the Lancers suffered their first loss in the HNAC as well. John Glenn, meanwhile, shutout Bremen 42-0 last week as Mason Kobelt had 112 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. "Feel like practice has gone very well," said Kaiser when asked how the John Glenn week of preparation has gone. "The guys are focused on getting back in the win column." LaVille leads the series 32-24-1, but trails 15-14 to the Falcons in games played at John Hostrawser Field. "Offensively they have good balance in the running and passing game," explained Kaiser of John Glenn. "It all starts with their QB - #3 Chase Miller. He is quick and has an arm to go with it. The running game also has #47 Mason Kobelt and #22 Blake Wright, then stretching the field will be #14 Ty Larkin. We have to play assignment football and gang tackle to slow them down." Defensively, LaVille allows 12.o points per game, which puts them in the top half of the best defense in the state and 3rd in Class 2A. John Glenn's offense averages 22 points per game. Something has to give. On defense, the Falcons allow 19 ppg, while the Lancer offense averages 25 ppg. "Glenn's defense is very aggressive and has speed to make plays," says the Lancer boss. "Guys we have noticed on film are LB's #83 Eli Beeny, #22 Blake Wright and #18 Julian McMahan and then in the secondary they have #3 Miller and #14 Larkin. We must have a balanced attack and win the line of scrimmage battle with them." Kaiser's crew battled a solid Redskin team a week ago. In fact, the Lancers had a shot at the end zone with three seconds left before a twist blitz brought Plummer down as the horn sounded. "I felt on both sides of the ball against Knox that we battled well," Kaiser recalled of the Knox game. "We faced a very good football team and went toe to toe with them for 48 minutes. That is what we will need to continue to do each week to get back to winning." It will be a great night for high school football Friday and the LaVille at John Glenn tradition is a great place to start. "Hope to see everyone at the game for this backyard brawl!" concluded Kaiser. Game on . . . G A M E D A Y Who? 2A #7 LaVille (5-1) at John Glenn (4-2) When? September 29, 7:30 p.m. ET Where?
