LAKEVILLE - On one of the best weather days so far in August, the rivalry between the Argos and LaVille girls' soccer programs was renewed. Tuesday's match was the 25th since 2012 and it was a very defensive match as the teams played to a 0-0 tie at Newton Park. It was played before a large crowd and sunny skies. "They (ties) are part of the game," said LaVille coach Kevin Christy. "Nobody loves them, but I'll tell you what, it felt like we were on defense the entire first half. "We fought back in the second half and kind of changed the game and had a couple opportunities there at the end to put one away, but just didn't quite do it." Shots on goal came at a premium, with unofficially six shots on frame for Argos and five for the host Lancers for the match. The best scoring opportunity for Argos came just under 16 minutes in the first half. Forward Elaina Conklin found herself with the ball inside the 18. Conklin took her chance against LaVille goalie Denni Markin. Conklin's shot was easily handled by Markin for the save. The Dragons were able to get a few more shots to score, but shot attempts sailed over the crossbar. The best scoring chance for the Lancers came a bit under 12 minutes remaining in the match. LaVille's Madison Mishler came up the right side, struck the ball and hit the crossbar. What looked like a goal on the glancing shot toward the ground, was not credited a goal by the officiating crew. Play on. The LHS defense was tough and rallied together to help support the effort by Markin. "Denni has good hands and is reliable for sure," said Christy. "She knows the position well and is vocal. She's a good goal-keeper. "You don't love ties, but I thought we played a good game against a really good opponent. I'm happy with how we finished." LHS (1-0-1) will travel to Westville August 27. The JV match is scheduled for a 5:30 PM start EDT.
