Football Scores 21 Unanswered Points, Rally For Win At John Glenn

WALKERTON, IN. - For the first time this season, the 2A #7 LaVille High School football team trailed by 17 points at halftime. One might think that the LaVille football coaching staff would gather together, talk about adjustments that need to be made and head into the second half with a whole new game plan. Nope. In fact, totally the opposite took place. What went down was a little 'heart-to-heart talk' from LaVille head football coach Jeff Kaiser. That 'talk' paid big dividends as Kaiser watched the Lancer football team rally by scoring 21 unanswered points in an exciting 31-27 come-from-behind victory over their backyard rival at John Hostrawser Field. "You know I challenged them to play with a lot of heart," explained Kaiser. "I'll be honest, we didn't make a lot of adjustments. We played base football in the first half and they were just out executing us in the first half. We were playing complacent, slow. Honestly, we had a heart to heart talk at halftime." After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, the Lakeville visitors started the second half with possession of the ball. Kaiser watched as his team methodically used four players to push the ball into John Glenn territory. Once on the Falcon side of the 50 yard line, LaVille continued with more ground attack until entering the red zone. Finally, inside the 10 and two plays later a Cody Allen 4-yard touchdown run. Allen, along with Lucas Plummer, Jonathan Neese, and Xzavian Lafave played a role as the LaVille offensive line pushed open holes and rushers powered its way down the field. Lucas Plummer tacked on the all-important point after touchdown and the three score lead was trimmed to 10 points. Glenn, who used its own power running attack in the first half, started its opening drive of the second half at its own six. Three plays later Lafave stepped in front of Chase MIller's pass for LHS interception and momentum started taking a big turn. As the Lancer offense took over at the John Glenn 16, Plummer and company went for the jugular. Plummer dropped back, let tight end Michael Good run his route and dropped a dime into Good hands for a 16-yard TD pass. Plummer also added the PAT and suddenly the momentum shift settled firmly on the LaVille sidelines. On its first possession of the final period, Miller and the John Glenn offense tried to work the clock in hopes of getting some points on the board to extend its slim lead. Mason Kobelt and Miller slowly helped move the ball into LaVille territory. A holding penalty pushed the ball from the LaVille 29 to the LaVille 39 and the LaVille defense did the rest by holding the Falcons on downs and a crack at taking the lead. Tailing just 27-24 with 7:24 on the fourth quarter clock, Kaiser's offense took over after forcing JG into two straight incomplete passes. LaVille was now looking for the lead. For just short of three minutes, LaVille used a steady diet of Allen, Plummer and Lafave again to work the ball down field. On a 2nd-and-9 from the Flacon 33, Good was headed downfield. As Good was making his move, Plummer lofted the ball up. The 6'3" senior receiver had to come back slightly for the ball, but hauled it down, broke a tackle and sprinted to the end zone. It was Plummer's second TD pass of the game and second to Good. Plummer tacked on his fourth PAT and LaVille took a 31-27 advantage. Plummer finished the game with just three completions for 51 yards, but two of those passes were for TDs. "Hey that's all it takes," Kaiser said with a smile. "Whatever was working, we tried rolling with it." What was also working was the running of junior Cody Allen. "Cody is just a workhorse," Kaiser said of his junior speedster who finished with 124 yards on 30 carries. "He'll just secretly get you yards because he just keeps fighting and fighting. That kid has a ton of heart. He is one of the hardest workers in the weight room. And it shows in big games." As Kaiser reflected on the halftime deficit, in the back of his mind, he knew it was going to have to one possession at a time in the last 24 minutes. "We get the first possession (of the second half)," said Kaiser. "We get a score then it would be a two score (game). We knew it was going to take a little bit to get in there. Score that. Be patient with it. Score that and get a defensive stop and we get right back in the ball game. And by gosh they did it. These kids have a lot of heart. These kids hate losing. They play with a lot of heart and a lot of emotion. I'm proud of them." LaVille improves to 6-1 overall and returns to Hoosier North play with a trip to North Judson-San Pierre on October 6. * * * * LAVILLE 31, JOHN GLENN 27 At John Hostrawser Field, Walkerton, IN Score By Quarters LaVIlle 7 3 14 7 - 31 John Glenn 12 15 0 0 - 27 Scoring Summary JG - Julian McMahan 99 kickoff return; kick failed LV - Cody Allen 1 run; Lucas Plummer kick JG - Chase Miller 2 run; pass failed JG - Mason Kobelt 1 run; Larkin pass from Miller JG - Beeny 2 pass from Miller; Miller kick LV - Allen 4 run; Plummer kick LV - Michael Good 16 pass from Plummer; Plummer kick LV - Good 32 pass from Plummer; Plummer kick LV JG First Downs. 15 16 Yards Rushing. 199 158 Comp-Att-Int 3-5-0. 11-18-1 Yards Passing 51 112 Penalties-Yards 2-10 5-30 Punts-Avg 2-36 2-18
