LAKEVILLE - The LaVille girls bowling team heads into the 2023-24 season with valuable experience on their side and looking forward to the coming season. As the 2022-23 season moved along, coach Kevin Kubsch saw marked improvement and also had the chance to see some of his own advance in the individual tournament. "Last year was an amazing season for the Lancer Bowling Team," said Kubsch, now in his fourth season as the Lancer skipper. "We had a great run through tournament time and we opened a lot of eyes throughout Northern Indiana with how well the kids performed." Of note was the advancement of then-junior Jaedyn Shaw to the regional individual portion of the tournament series. Shaw, along with Brooklyn Smith, Neveah Beerwart, and Trinity Pickett return to lead this year's version of LaVille Bowling. "The girls will be anchored by senior Jaedyn Shaw and junior Brooklyn Smith and also returning this year with hopes of having a breakout season is Trinity Pickett,"said LaVille coach Kevin Kubsch. "The newcomers to the girls team this year are Junior Allison Easterday and Freshman Christina Bau who have been doing a great job getting ready for the start of the season." For Shaw, she enjoyed the opportunity to advance in the individual event, but would like to move on in the tournament and have more team involvement this year. "I was excited about going to regionals," said Shaw. "I was nervous because of the great bowlers that were there and they have been bowling since they were younger. "Personally I would like to go past regionals this year. I would also like to improve my average. I'd like to go over 140. Last season, there were some high school girls that were shooting 150s, 160s consistently. But they have graduated." As for the team, Shaw would like to see more girls out for the team. "I just want the team to grow in the future. We only have 5 girls and we should have 7." Since the season ended earlier in 2023, Shaw has been hard at work to improve her game. "Definitely worked on picking up spares," Shaw noted. "I am starting to control the ball more and picking up my spares is getting better." According to Shaw, Smith is a great morale booster for the team. "Brooklyn has a lot of energy," said the lone senior on the team. "The team sees the energy that she has and the whole team just feeds off that. Especially me because we are so close." The Michiana West Conference has a total of 10 girls teams competing this year. Argos, John Glenn, Mishawaka, New Prairie, Penn, Plymouth, Rochester, South Bend Adams, and South Bend Riley join the Lancers. Kubsch says that Mishawaka, Plymouth and Rochester are the top teams. The LaVille coach also points out that there will be junior varsity matches and middle school students continue to join practices. 'Lancer Pride' is the theme for the new season, noted Kubsch. ". . . We hope that the program lives up to those expectations that the team has for themselves," said the fourth-year Lancer coach. "They are anxious to get that Lancer Pride going." Overall, Kubsch really wants the kids to enjoy the opportunity that bowling gives the kids. "For us to be successful this season we just need to relax and enjoy the game and not put too much pressure on themselves," concluded Kubsch. "They have the ability to translate good games on the lanes and not overthink things. This will make them successful!" Kubsch's team will open the 2023 season against John Glenn on October 10. The Michiana West Conference match gets started at 6 p.m. at Chippewa Bowl.
