UNION MILLS - For the second consecutive year, LaVille will face Wheeler in the first match of the Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament. The Lancers (12-18) square off against the Bearcats (13-15) in the second quarterfinal match at approximately 8 p.m. in the Class 2A Sectional #34 at South Central High School.  The 6:30 p.m. opener pits Hebron (15-15) opposite North Judson-San Pierre (22-10).  Thursday's winners will advance to the semifinals on October 14 starting at 11 a.m.Waiting in the wings are #3 South Central (30-0), who drew a first round bye and will face the winner of the Hebron-NJSP encounter.  Career Academy South Bend (7-17) got the next bye and will meet the Wheeler-LaVille survivor. The championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night. A year ago, LaVille met Wheeler in the sectional and went the distance in a five set thriller.  The Bearcats slipped past LHS 3-2 and eliminated the Lancers. This season, a pair of juniors lead Wheeler - Riley Fox is the leading hitter, while Abigail Allen is tops in digs.  Seniors Genesee Klimczak is the top blocker and Lexi Cutka is charged with setting up the Bearcat offense. "We are happy to draw Wheeler," said LaVille coach Pat Gring.  "Last year we went 2-3 with them (losing) but just one of the best matches of the season! I'm sure they will bring the same good efforts this year." Gring says that an inspired victory over Culver Community on Senior Night followed by solid play two days later at the Caston Invitational have recharged her team. "Our win on Senior Night has energized the girls and their play on Saturday was solid," said Gring. "Every match brings us something new, so to play (state-ranked) Faith Christian was a great experience. I'm hopeful we can keep the energy going as the season winds down." The host Satellites wear the tag of the favorite with a 2A #3 ranking and a 30-0 overall record."With a record of 30-0, South Central would seem the favored. But just like with our undefeated football team last year, you never know what might happen in Sectionals."
