UNION MILLS - The volleyball team opened the 2023 Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament at the 2A Sectional #34 at South Central. LaVille started slow, trailing 10-2 in the first set, before rallying for a 25-20 victory over Wheeler to take set one. After winning the second set 25-19, the Bearcats evened up the score at 2-2 after wins in set three and four. LaVille fought back to pick up a 15-12 triumph in the deciding fifth set to advance to the semifinal round against Career Academy South Bend.  LaVille's defense played a big role defending the Wheeler attack. LHS collected 96 digs to keep the match close. Kate Aschenbrenner and Caitlyn Goffinet combined for 36 digs. Elaina Borton had 17 digs and the duo of Ava Fuchs and Lily Smith had 32 digs between them. While the defense was doing its due diligence, the net attack used a group LaVille effort to keep the Wheeler busy. Smith led the way with nine kills, Aschenbrenner, Borton, and Fuchs combined for 21 kills, and Goffinet added six. The Lancers are scheduled to play at approximately 12:30 p.m. ET at South Central High School.
