BREMEN - Bremen head football coach Justin Bogunia knew his team needed to pay attention to details.   Friday night was going to be a double-edged sword as LaVille and Bremen met for the 58th time. It was not only a rivalry game between the two schools, but also the lid-lifter as the Indiana Northern State Conference opening week took shape. The threat of LaVille's triple-option made Bogunia's boys cross their t's and dot ttheir i's. The Lions spent all week in preparation for the Lancers offense and ended up with a dominating 49-7 INSC victory at Don J. Bunge Field. "I thought we played a well rounded football game," Bogunia said after watching his team improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2018. "LaVille did some things to cause us problems, as well. Miller is always a threat when he gets his hands on the ball and that was our main thing tonight and he still got one." After the Lions posted a 28-0 halftime advantage, LaVille came out fired up in the third quarter. It wasn't that Bremen totally shut down the Lancer triple-option attack. They moved the ball in the opening half, just couldn't finish. Senior quarterback Noah Menis led LaVille on a nine-play 62-yard drive capped off by Miller getting loose for a 16-yard TD run. That narrowed the Lion lead to 28-7 with 3:01 left in the third stanza. LaVille did get three more opportunities to close the game, but could not finish.  Bremen, meanwhile, had two more second-half drives and finished off both for points. "The big difference was Bremen finishing drives and we did not," explained LaVille coach Matt Thacker.  "Very frustrating, but at the same time we were able to move the ball pretty well against a very good defense.  Plus, we had two turnovers and failed to cover the ball on kickoff return, which is another turnover.  Bremen had zero turnovers and you can’t do that against a good team. "Finishing drives is huge as it provides confidence for our defense and team as a whole." Moser was the leading rusher, working for 160 yards on 11 carries.  Quarterback Jake Rodriguez ran for 81 yards and threw for 70 yards. Miller added 99 yards on the ground, while Jimenez had two receptions for 61 yards and 2 TDs.LHS mustered just 53 total yards for the game and worked extremely hard to find positive yards.  In fact, the Lancers drove to the Bremen one yard-line, only to be held on downs. "We worked real hard on stopping their offense this week," said Bogunia.  "It's a difficult offense to stop. You gotta have all three phases, the quarterback, the dive man, and the pitch man. I thought we stopped the first two and then rallied to the third man. We did a great job. We put them in some bad spots. They did get to the 40 or 50. We weren't happy about that but then the defense stepped up. And even that goal line stand, that is just heart." Still just four games into a new coach and new offense for the Lancers. Thacker continues to watch his team make strides, day to day and game to game. "The positives are encouraging and proof that we are getting better," noted the Lancer boss. "The next step is finishing those drives with points and helping our defense.  Defensively we did force them to punt 2 times and the third was a fake punt where we gave up contain.  It’s a team game and we have to continue to make progress in all phases in order to get to where we want to be. "The process will not change. Being and staying positive will not change.  Believing in our guys and coaches will not change.  Football is a game of lessons.  We have to learn from these lessons and keep pushing forward." We had a chance to ask Bogunia about the rivalry with the Lancers. "Any time we play each other, we are backyard rivals," explained the Bremen skipper as BHS moves the series lead to 40-17.  "Our kids know each other and then get that first conference win. We're in it now, it's every game. In our conference, right, and good luck to LaVille, but it's just a grind ahead of us. We just wanna try to keep stacking wins. One game at a time. If you look past one team on a Friday night and that is probably going to be an 'L' for you. Stay humble and just get to the grind." LaVille moves to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.  LHS returns home September 18 as Tippecanoe Valley pays a visit to Lancer Field.
