MISHAWAKA - LaVille bowlers took a break from Michiana West Conference action to participate in the St. Joe Valley United State Bowling Congress Kings & Queens / Prince & Princess Tournament over the weekend at Parkway Lanes. Lancer bowlers made quite a showing as area bowlers competed for scholarship dollars. Jaedyn Shaw finished second in the qualifying round after a 494 scratch before winning the step ladder finals to earn first place and the top scholarship position for the Queen Division. "We had a kings and queens tournament at Parkway Lanes and it's a scholarship opportunity," said Shaw, a senior. "Anybody that is a youth bowler can sign up and bowl in it. They put it together based on Averages. But if you have a lower average and want to be moved up to the higher averages you can do that, which is what I did. "I was nervous, obviously. I was playing against some pretty good girls. I even bowled against the same girl that I lost to last year in the final game. But this time I just bowled, I didn't think about it and I ended up winning. The top four bowlers earn scholarship money. I was definitely doing very good compared to past years. I feel like bowling at our home bowling place (Parkway) helped me not be so nervous." LaVille's Olivia Grindle and Christina Bau finished 1-2 in the Princess Division following the 3-game qualifying series. Gindle carved out a 396 scratch in the qualifier, while Bau had 332. In the step ladder finals Bau edged out Grindle as the Lancer duo finished 1-2. In the King Division, LaVille's Sean Kubsch rolled a 601 scratch in the 3-game qualifier before finishing in fourth place during the step ladder finals. "You get like 10-20 people in each category," Sean responded when asked about the tournament. "A smaller group of younger girls and boys and then a bigger group in the King and Queen. It was fun. It's always fun to hang out with my dad and hang around with each other and pick each other up and have fun. "I got fourth place. I did really well in the qualifying round and then once we started in the step ladder finals, I kinda stuck it up. I'll be honest. It was just nerves, I think." Several other LHS bowlers competed in the King Series - Ryan Carmichael (5th), Andrew Wolford (6th), and Hayden Grindle (7th). Carmichael wound up with 680 scratch, Wolford 592, and Grindle 576.Lancer Jackson Powers finished with a 502 scratch in the qualifying segment of the Princess Division to move on to the step ladder finals. Powers closed out the step ladder finals in third place. "We had a great showing from LaVille bowlers in the King & Queen / Prince & Princess Tournament," said LaVille coach Kevin Kubsch. "LaVille had 5 of the top 10 in the King Division. Jaedyn won her match in the Queen Division and Jackson qualified second in the Prince Division. He lost to South Bend Riley's Aiden Craft, who won it all. It was an All-LaVille final for the Princess Division. Christina Bau eventually edged out Olivia Grindle. It was a strong showing with kids qualifying and then advancing to the step ladder finals. Overall, we've competed very well in this event." LaVille jumps back into Michiana West Conference action Saturday at Country Lanes in Rochester, IN. The LaVille boys bowling team will square off against South Bend Adams at 3 p.m., followed by a second match with Plymouth at approximately 5 p.m. The LaVille girls bowling team will play a position round at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 5. New Prairie awaits in the 4 p.m. match.
