LAKEVILLE - LaVille opened the 2023-24 girls basketball season by hosting Jimtown Thursday at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. Similar to a boxing match, the two teams battled in the early going before the Jimmies grabbed a 10-3 lead, nearing the final minute of the first quarter. A big 12-foot bucket by LaVille's Brooke Edison and a huge 3-pointer by Lily Smith narrowed the gap to 14-8 as the quarter ended. Both defenses showed how stingy they could be as they combined for a total of 13 points and a 21-15 Jimtown lead at the break. During that second stanza, the defense we were Talking about forced 12 combined turnovers and just six total field goals made. The Jimmies picked up the tempo in the second quarter, applying pressure defense that turned LaVille over and helped Jimtown to a 20-point outburst in the quarter. Williams led the offense with eight of her game-high 20 points. Kylie Wiegand added five points, including a trey. Trailing 41-21, LaVille tried to peck away at the Jimmie lead. The Lancer defense became more aggressive, pressured the ball, sent several players to the boards, and made their way to the free line. Jimtown pushed the lead to 24 points on a couple of occasions in the final eight minutes. With the Jimmies leading 56-32 with 2:48 remaining, the Lancers never gave up. LHS scored the game's final seven points to reach the final outcome. Kwiatkowski, Edison, Deason, and Porsha Coffin played tough to cut into the deficit. Coffin, a 5'6" senior, scored her first two varsity points off the bench. Unofficially, Edison led the way for LaVille with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 steals. Kwiatkowski added 12 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the final quarter. Williams led Jimtown with 20 points on 7-of-7 from the charity line and 3-pointer. Butler had 12 points, and Kylie Wiegand 10. LaVille moves to 0-1 and will play host to South Central (UM) on November 4. JV tip is scheduled for 6pm, with varsity to follow. The Jimmies even their record out at 1-1 and will play host to Bethany Christian on November 7. * * * * * JIMTOWN 56, LAVILLE 39 At Lakeville Score By Quarters Jimtown 14 21 41 56 LaVille 8 15 21 39 Jimtown - Kylie Wiegand 10, Madison Woolwine 0, Liberty Dover 3, Alexis Garretson 4, Justyce Williams 20, Abbey Brown 5, Natalie Butler 12, Brooklyn King 0, Caitlynn Track 2, Keira Jackson 0.
