BREMEN -  Over the years, LaVille and Bremen have had some highly-competitive high school girls soccer matches. The Lancers led the series 11-6-1 since 2013 going into Tuesday's meeting.  But the Lions had won the last five matches in a row, including a IHSAA regional championship Oct. 16, 2025 at Jane's Park in Bremen.  Among those 18 meetings since 2013, 13 of those have been decided by two or less goals. In the 2025 meeting, the Lions were dominant in winning 7-0 in the state tournament series to advance to the semi-state. Fast forward to Tuesday night and tension was in the air.  There was fantastic defense by both clubs, along with no blow out in sight.  Kudos to both teams. Fans in attendance were treated to another showdown.  First team to one goal wins this round. And that's exactly as it played out. LaVille and Bremen played to a scoreless tie through 80 minutes of regulation. Following the first seven minutes of overtime, the score remained tied at 0-0. In the second overtime, the Lancers had the opportunity to score off a corner kick. The initial LaVille shot was missed. LaVille's Lexi McQueen was in the right place at the right time for her effort.  When 0:00 showed on the clock LaVille came out the winner, 1-0. "It was just our energy the entire game," said goalie Denni Markin after the match.  "They were worried about the calls and we just played through everything.  We didn't care if we got called, we just drove throughout the game. We had the mentality that we wanted to win.  We were on a bad streak and we wanted to pick it up, get some tough wins back and regroup." This was the first 1-0 Lancer victory since September 11, 2014. "It was a great defensive battle," explained the Lancer goalie.  "The midfield was working their butts off and then it came to the corner kick in overtime. We had a chance to shoot but missed and we call it a trick play, but Lexi McQueen just ran up on the ball. She hit it and landed it perfectly in the top corner." To say that there would be some memories of the regional flashback for LHS would be an understatement. "It didn't stick with us very well," recalled Markin.  "We were like the last time we were here, we got beat and it was our regional game. We didn't want to keep losing to them. It's been a mentality, we've got to beat Bremen. It was very nice to go out there and get this one.  This kind of game puts it into perspective that we can beat Bremen." LaVille's victory Tuesday ended Bremen's 13-match home field winning streak dating back to a 2-1 loss to John Glenn on September 4, 2025. On the final night of INSC regular season play, Coach Kevin Christy's club finished third in the INSC standings and are scheduled to face John Glenn, who finished second in the INSC regular season standings in the INSC Soccer Championships.  That LaVille-John Glenn opening round match will be played September 24th at 5:30pm inside Newton Park. "I think it's important to not think about how we lost in the regular season (to John Glenn)," said the senior goalkeeper. "We need to go out there and play like we did against Bremen. Keep the defense strong, energy high, communication and play as 'we' and not 'me'." LaVille moves to 4-4-2 overall (2-2 INSC). Bremen is now 7-2-2 (3-1 INSC).
