LAKEVILLE - No excuses! LaVille head girls soccer coach Kevin Christy knew Saturday's IHSAA LaVille Sectional #34 was going to a tough battle. And playing its third consecutive, the Lancers faced off against #11 Trinity Academy Saturday at Newton Park. Coach Christy was clear "Trinity is a really good team. They have proven it all year. We just talked about it (after the match Wednesday). There is no challenge that we don't look forward to honestly. When the draw came out, when the realignment came out was hey, this is going to be a tough sectional with top tier teams in this thing ... no matter what happens we are going to go out and give it everything we've got. Trinity is a good team but we've got as good of a shot to repeat, right." The two teams, who battled from the outset for the sectional crown and advancement to the IHSAA regional semifinal, kept the entire facility on the edge of their seats. In the end, the Titans fought off a very tough Lancer unit for a 2-1 victory in overtime. "I thought our girls took on the challenge really well," said Christy after the match. "We knew Trinity had some really talented players and we would need to play as a unit to be successful." Christy's crew got on the scoreboard first as Madison Mishler found a peak of light between her and the goal near the 34th minute mark of the first half. A whistle slowed the action as the ball bounced out of bounds. The Titans got a throw-in and Lancer Madison Mishler and a Trinity player tried to gain control. Upon entry, a whistle was blown and a foul called on the Titans. With confusion on the field, the ball was placed near the foul and Mishler took advantage, launching a shot from approximately 25-yards toward the goal. Mishler's effort cleared Trinity goalie Lucy Zimmer's outstretched arms into the back of the net. "With how we were playing, Mishler's goal was as big as they got in that period of the game," acknowledged Christy. "She wisely took advantage of some confusion on the field, saw a keeper out of position and delivered a beautiful shot." The first half concluded with the Lancers ahead, 1-0. "Once we got into the flow of the game we defended really well and had a few opportunities we just missed on our own," noted Christy. Trinity held possession of the ball for a large portion of the first half, then again in the second half. While LaVille's defense continued to help each other out of very close calls, Lancer goalie Denni Markin had to keep her head on a swivel and stay very active. Time-after-time, the Class 1A #11 Titans injected offense toward the goal, but LaVille 'D' and gatekeeper Denni Markin kept tight guard. Then in the 48th minute, the Titans made another scoring threat. Trinity was able to get a little deeper offensive attack inside the 19. Charis Gabrielse's led the attack. Gabrielse's first shot was deflected by LaVille's Sydney Williams. Gabrielses' pursuit was relentless. She couldn't find a way through the Lancer defenders, so she lobbed her rebound shot over Markin's head for the match-tying goal. "We knew Trinity was probably going to win the possession battle," explained the Lancer skipper. "But we were comfortable with that. We have played really as a unit this year and knew our middle and defense could handle the pressure. We asked a lot of them, but they were ready to rise to the challenge." With the score knotted at 1-1, the two squads played out the final minutes of regulation. As the horn sounded, we were headed to two seven minute overtime periods. The score remained tied 1-all through the first seven minutes. Then after exchanging sides, the Titans went back in attack mode. Trinity got off a shot that was saved by Markin. On the ensuing kick, Gabrielse was able to step in front of a would-be Lancer receiver. She carried the ball into the middle, then just as a pair of LaVille defenders came to help, the Titan senior midfielder fired her shot. The ball remained on a short-hop path that had a spin that kicked off the turf in front of the LaVille keeper and into the goal was proved to be the match-winner. Trinity improved to 13-3 overall and will play host to #18 Boone Grove, who improved to 15-1 after a 2-0 victory over Andrean. The regional semifinal will be Wednesday, October 14. As we closed our time with Christy, the Lancer boss, we asked about the overtime goal and what he saw."The OT goal by Trinity was delivered after some good footwork to find a good opportunity." LaVille finishes 7-7-2 on the season. LHS will graduate two seniors - goalie Denni Mark and defender Morgan Schmidt. "This season was definitely some ups and downs in the win/loss column," concluded Christy. "However our goal differential was +20 on the season and only had one loss decided by more than one goal. The girls also faced three OT games and fought for every minute we played. We told them they should be proud of how they fought at the end of the season. They had to overcome injuries, illnesses, and the mental fatigue of a season."
