LAFAYETTE - It has been said in sports many times - Defense wins championships. On Friday in the Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 2A football regional, defense ultimately decided the outcome of the battle between #5 LaVille and #11 Lafayette Central Catholic. After making adjustments on defense, it was the Knights that won their 11th regional title with a 22-0 victory over LaVille at Larocca Field. LaVille's defense was 5th in Class 2A, allowing 13.0 points per game. LCC was right behind LHS at 6th in 2A, giving up 13.8 ppg. Both defenses were in true form after one quarter of play and a scoreless tie. After LaVille's Collin Czarnecki intercepted Lafayette Central Catholic quarterback Bobby Metzger at the Lancer 15 the defense held. What followed was a 13-play drive, with four Lancer first downs. Only thing was, LaVille's Cody Allen was stopped a yard short of the chains on a 4th and 2. LCC took over at their own 24. After forcing a punt by Central Catholic, LaVille set up in good field position at the LCC 40. Lancer kicker Lucas Plummer attempted a 46-yard field goal, but the ball was wide left and short of the uprights. The two teams continued to show off their defense and had trouble reaching the goal line until late in the second period. After a LaVille punt, Central Catholic quarterback Bobby Metzfger found Alex Hardebeck in the deep right corner of the end zone for the lone touchdown of the first half. Metzger's 2-point pass attempt was incomplete, but the Knights led 6-0 at the break. Each team punted to start the third period before Metzger and the offense found some footing. A crucial 34-yard completion from Metzger to Nick Page moved Central Catholic into LaVille territory at the 18. Two plays later Page finished off a 9-yard touchdown run. Metzger picked up the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 Central Catholic lead. Limiting LaVille's rushing game the rest of the way finished off what was a record-breaking season for coach Jeff Kaiser's club, finishing the season at 11-2. The most wins ever in a single season for the Lancers. Metzger tossed his second TD pass of the game, finding Jackson Cain in the end zone for a 23-yard toss. The Central Catholic quarterback then hit Albert Schwartz for the 2-point pass. Plummer, who threw for more than 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, finished 8 of 23 and 75 yards. Cody Allen, who rushed for more than 1,400 yards and 21 TDs this season, concluded with 82 yards on 21 carries. Good led the defense with 9 tackles, while Braedyn Foster had 7 tackles, 2 for loss, and a sack. Erik Bedock, Jonathan Neese, and Xzavian Lafave added 5 tackles each. Neese had 3 tackles for loss and a sack and Bedock had a sack for the LHS defense. CLASS 2A IHSAA REGIONAL LAF.
