Lancer Trio, Defense Play Big Part In Basketball 'W'

LAKEVILLE - In a battle of defenses, LaVille came up with the final stop of the game. In addition to the Lancer defense, Lily Smith that played a vital role in the final outcome. The senior hitting a pair of free throws in an exciting 27-24 victory over Elkhart Christian Academy. Leading by one point and 13 seconds left in the game, Smith stepped to the free throw line for two shots. The first swished through the net, while the second was a little more dramatic. Smith's toss bounced off the front of the rim, hit the backboard, and then finally rattled in for a three point cushion. Elkhart Christian dribbled into the front court before calling timeout. Needing a 3-pointer, the Eagles set up the offense. LaVille clamped down immediately, forcing ECA away from the basket. And the clock ticked under seven seconds, Ivy Clapsaddle launched a 28 foot 3-pointer while being defended by Smith. The ball grazed off the front of the rim and out of bounds. LaVille inbounded the ball and time ran out for its first win of the season at Dale E.Cox Gymnasium. Lancer juniors Brooke Edison and Mikalah Kuskye led LaVille. Edison picked up a double-double, collecting 11 hard-earned points and 10 rebounds. Kuskye added 10 points, including a pair of crucial 3-pointers. The Lancer defense forced 29 ECA turnovers. Edison led the sniper effort with 8 of LaVille's 18 steals. Ava Weil and Kuskye added 3 steals each for the winners. Winning its second game in the last three, the Lancers improved to 2-4 overall. LHS will take some time off for Thanksgiving break and pick up the 23-24 schedule with a home date with Mishawaka on November 28.
