LAKEVILLE - It's a basketball night in Lakeville! LaVille will renew its rivalry with Bremen during a special edition of Thursday night hoops. Bremen makes the short drive west on Hwy 6 for the 92nd meeting in the series.  The Lions lead the Lancers, 49-42.  LaVille cut the Bremen winning streak short at two following a 42-37 victory at Bremen last season. A year ago, the respective defenses went to work for both teams as LaVille won in the lowest scoring game in recent history. Collin Czarnecki led all scorers with 15 points and Owen Smith added 11 points in a 42-37 Lancer win. The Lions were led by Baylor Orcutt with 12 points and Julian Alvarado with 11. LHS finished off a 15-10 overall mark last season and lost a 2A North Judson Sectional semifinal to Career Academy South Bend. This season, the Lions are off to a 1-0 start after picking up a 53-45 victory over Argos on November 22. Chase Devine and Silas Laidig led Bremen with 13 points each against the Dragons.  Camden Hickman added 11 for BHS. Coach Matt Miller's squad connected from long distance, making nine 3-pointers, including three each from Devine and Laidig. With the success of the LaVille football team, the Lancer basketball season was pushed back a bit. As coach Michael Edison and his staff were getting the addition of the football players and the team prepared for the coming season, he had the chance to scout the Bremen-Argos game. "I was able to see Bremen and Argos play last week and it was a very well played game by both sides," said Edison.  "Bremen plays extremely hard and have a lot of movement on offense.  They have several really good shooters and share the ball very well.  They have a lot of nice pieces to having a nice, complete team.  I was also impressed with the way they crash the boards both on the offensive end as well as the defensive end.  They will be a very tough opponent for us on Thursday night!" Miller's team returns seven off a 2-20 unit in 2022-23.  Among those returning are Julian Alvarado, Camden Hickman, Silas Laidig,, Tyrus Graverson, Luke Kincaid, Aden Hunziker, and Noah Wildauer. "Bremen has a very solid team this year!"  explained Edison. "They are always one of fiercest competitors in all sports because of the rivalry that has developed over the years.  I expect this game to be a battle from the time the tip takes place until the final buzzer sounds. "Even though we had some extra time to prepare for Bremen there are always so many things to put in before the first game.  Getting good habits established is key to have a good foundation for the entirety of the season.  Bremen has several young players who know the game of basketball very well.  It is really tough to tell how we will come out and play, especially since we did not have a scrimmage this year.  I am hoping that some of our returning leadership will help us get started on the right track." As Edison continued his scouting of the Lions, a couple of things caught his attention. "Probably the biggest thing is their 5 out motion offense," explained the Lancer coach.  "They do not stand and really make good hard cuts to the basket.  They are really tough to contain as they do not settle for going half speed.  They also have really good hands and share the ball better than an average team.  Keeping them boxed out on the offensive glass is also a concern of mine.  Hopefully we can do some things to negate their positive play." On the LaVille sidelines, coach Edison returns seven, including his three starters. Leading the way is junior Collin Czarnecki (19.2 points per game), followed by seniors Michael Good (11.9 ppg), and Lucas Plummer (10.9 ppg). "We do have some scorers coming back," said Edison, who is 215-134 all-time at LaVille. "We have Michael Good, Collin Czarnecki and Lucas Plummer. They are the three returning that have the most experience. After that we have some guys that will have to step up. It's not like we are going to have to replace all of our scoring." According to Edison, LaVille must box out extremely well, take care of the ball, not have excessive unforced turnovers, and will need to execute offensive sets.In order to depart Dale E. Cox Gymnasium, Edison acknowledged three important factors. "We must communicate well with one another, play with good focus, keep our man in front of us and finish square on defense."
