Lancer Trio Leads Comeback Effort In Win Over Clay

LAKEVILLE - Trailing 24-13 and moving toward the final three minutes of the third quarter, LaVille cranked up the defensive intensity. That strong defense turned an 11-point deficit into runs of 12-0 and 7-3 over the final 11:10 of the game as the Lancers rallied for a 32-27 victory over South Bend Clay. LaVille's defense forced 29 Clay turnovers, of which 12 were steals for the Lancers. Brooke Edison led the sniper attack with six steals. "I feel like our defense picked up and our on ball pressure was more aggressive," said Lancer boss Nicholas Amor. "I also feel like the group that was in ran the floor well and found each other in transition." During the big third quarter LaVille spurt, the Lancer defense held the Colonials scoreless, while Brooke Edison, Ava Weil, and Faith Mejer contributed. Weil swished a 3-point basket with nine seconds left in the period to narrow the Clay lead to 24-21. The Lancer trio also played a role as LHS outscored the Colonials 11-3 in the final stanza, including a gamut of stat filling areas - rebounds, steals, assists, jumpers, free throws, and points in the paint. "All three of them had great effort, and I think the key to all three of their success is the shots were within 8 to 10 feet of the rim," Amor said of Edison, Mejer, and Weil. "We need to find ways to get to the basket with this group when you have a struggling shooting percentage, you have to get to the rim and see the ball go in the hole to build confidence. I feel like all three of them did a good job Being aggressive, offensively getting downhill and getting to the rim." A big lift off the bench was the play of Faith Mejer. The 5'9" sophomore was given an opportunity to contribute and answered the call. She finished with a career-high 10 points to go with six rebounds, an assist and a steal. She was also very active on both offense and defense. ". . . it was an opportunity and Faith stepped up and took hold of the opportunity and made the most of it," noted Amor. "She is an aggressive player, and we know that she can score. Where we were apprehensive was her defensive ability, and she showed that she can play at the varsity level . She also does give us a lot of good play off of the glass and gets second chance opportunities. She will definitely start to see her minutes grow." Weil, who just notched a career-high 11 points vs. Triton on November 29, led all scorers with a new career-high 13 points, including a big lift from long range to close the third quarter in the Clay contest. Amor's club improves to 3-6 overall and prepares for a doubleheader this weekend. LaVille will be the lead game of a Hoosier North girl-boy DH on December 8 against Winamac (6-4). Friday's tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. for the gals, with the guys following about 8 p.m. Saturday, LaVille Lady Hoops makes a trip south for a December 9 meeting at Logansport (0-7). The junior varsity is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip, with varsity to follow.
