ARGOS - Utilizing an effective offense, deflections, and turnovers, the LaVille High School basketball used a strong start to pick up a 63-44 victory at Phil Weybright Gymnasium. The Lancers hit the floor focused and ready on both ends of the floor to take an early lead. With LaVille leading 9-5, senior Michael Good got a key deflection that turned into a two-handed dunk to energize Lancer Nation. LaVille went on to shoot 62% in the quarter, while Argos hit two field goals and concluded a 17% field goal percentage to get off to a 20-5 lead. More of the same came in the second quarter as the Lakeville guests increased its lead to 23 points on three occasions before halftime. "I thought we really came out with some strong intensity against Argos," LaVille coach Michael Edison said after watching his team move to 1-1 overall. "We were able to get some good open looks and knock down some shots as well as limit the good looks they were getting. I was very pleased!" Edison's club pestered Argos in the half-court, and at times from 42 feet, as well. LHS swarmed to force 15 turnovers, including 11 steals. Lance Edison was the lead sniper with three steals. Lucas Plummer, Collin Czarneck, and Good all chipped in with two steals each. "So many of our guys got steals and deflections throughout the first half," said Edison. "This led to transition points and easy buckets for us. We also crashed the boards very hard and had quite a few offensive rebounds." The game inside the paint played a vital role for both teams throughout the game. In fact, LaVille outscored Argos, 52-30 in the paint for the game, which also translated into 67% shooting inside the lane. In the second half, flexed its muscle with on-ball pressure and transition baskets. In fact, with the Lancers leading 48-24, Good stepped in front of a Dragon pass, pushed the ball up to Czarnecki, who in turn lobbed a pass to the 6'3" good, who electrified the crowd once more with his second dunk of the game. "I was fortunate there on defense," explained Good on the second half slam. "I cheated a little, got a deflection and then was able to get the ball out to Collin. "As we're running down the floor, I heard coach (Edison) say 'pass to Collin and then get it back'. We kind of made eye contact and it was super exciting to finish it off. It gave us some momentum there in the second half." When asked about the first half deflection, steal and dunk, Good was able to play it back for us. "Since they (Argos) run a lot of the same things we do, I expected them to pass it back up to the top. I was able to use that to my advantage, I was able to get a little tip and push the ball up the floor. It definitely got the crowd going, It helped to kick-start the game for us and gave us some extra juice." Good went on to finish with 18 points, including 12 in the first half, and four rebounds. Czarnecki was able to find several spots on the floor he liked, canning 11 total field goals and nearly a 50% shooting night from the field. The 6'3" junior led all scorers with 24 points and polished off his double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. "Collin Czarnecki and Michael Good played extremely well for us on the offensive end," said Edison. "Collin was able to score all around the court while Michael did a great job posting up and finishing down low." Give Argos tremendous credit, as coach Jason Breden's squad never quit. In the fourth period, the Dragons were able cut into the deficit with just under three minutes left, but the Lancers came up with a pair of big stops to maintain their lead. "Argos played very hard and didn’t give up," explained Edison. "They battled back some in the fourth quarter as I thought we were taking some quick shots and were not doing the best job taking care of the ball and getting good solid box outs." Overall, it was a much-improved effort for LaVille following the loss to Bremen in late November. "I thought we played great on both sides of the ball," concluded Good. "It was a good bounce back game for us and we have to keep that momentum going forward. I feel like that game (against Argos), we can use as a gauge and now we've got to keep going forward." Coach Edison also talked about guys that were able to give quality minutes, either in a starting role or coming off the bench. "Cody Allen played very good defense for us and had a couple nice buckets. Braedyn Foster did a great job passing and playing physical down low. Avery was able to get some solid minutes which hopefully will help grow his confidence. Lance did a nice job by getting a couple steals and playing some solid minutes but hopefully will help him to continue to gain confidence. Andre and Lucas did a nice job running the point guard position throughout the game." Foster played solid inside, corralling 8 rebounds. Czarnecki also led LHS with 4 assists. LaVille improves to 1-1 overall and will open the Hoosier North Season on December 8. It will be part of a girl-boy doubleheader. The varsity girls tip things off against Winamac at 6:30 p.m., with the varsity boys to follow at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. LAVILLE 63, ARGOS 44 At Phil Weybright Gymnasium, Argos, IN.
