Basketball Falls To Hebron

LAKEVILLE - When one looks at the final outcome of the Hebron at LaVille high school basketball game, one may see the 45-35 Hawks victory over the Lancers was not close. It was a lot closer than 10 points, and for most of the game. Competitive, fast-paced, patient at times, outside shooting, points in the paint, and slam dunks. The basketball fans in attendance at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium certainly got their money's worth. A quickly played first quarter had both teams forcing the tempo when the chance appeared, but also working in the halfcourt as the score was tied three times and the lead changed hands three times. From long distance shooting - five combined 3-pointers in the quarter - to a break away flush by LaVille's Michael Good, Hebron scored the final five points of the quarter to give the Hawks a 15-12 lead. Spencer Wynsma and Landen Hale scored as the Hawks increased their lead to 20-12 early in the second quarter. The Lancers, however, caught fire and went on a 14-5 run to take a 26-25 lead into halftime. Baskets by Good, Lucas Plummer, a pair of treys by Collin Czarnecki and Andre Gonzales, and an old-fashioned three-point play by Braedyn Foster got Lancer Nation fired up heading into the locker room. Then, leading early in the fourth period, Coach Michael Edison directed his club to run the offense and work for a good shot. A minute went by. Then 90-seconds off the clock. Two minutes, then three minutes as LaVille continued to work for the right look. LaVille worked over 3:26 off the clock before a lane opened up, the ball was off the side of the glass and bounced off the front of the rim. That was a sign of the way much of the game went for the Lancer offense . . . off the iron, around the rim and out. "We aren't that great of shooters," explained Edison. "We are okay shooters. If you look at the stats so far this year, we are what we are. It doesn't mean that we don't have some guys that can hit some shots here and there. We play Westview next and I was just watching some of them and they just have several pure shooters. We don't have guys like that that night in and night out are justing going to do that so we have to find other ways to get the ball in the hole and find a way to win." The Lancers finished the game hitting just 12 total field goals. They were 7 of 32 (22%) from 2-point territory and 12 of 47 overall (25%). Hebron finished 46% from 3-point range and 50% overall from the floor. Hebron was able to outscore the hosts 9-4 in the quarter to take a 34-30 lead. A basket by Good and two free throws by Lance Edison kept the Lancers close. The fourth period was much the same. A basket by Hebron's Trever Roy, a triple from Peter Socci and another Roy bucket put HHS on top by nine. Lucas Plummer canned a triple with 3:56 left, but those would be the final points for LaVille as Hebron outscored 9-0 down the stretch to put the game away. "Hebron has a nice combination of being big and being some really good shooters," said Edison. "I think they hit 7 3's against us. They had several (3-pointers) in a row or at key times." "I loved that minute-and-half, two minutes where we just worked them. They are having to defend, they are having to guard during that time and it's not easy to play defense for that long. And during that stretch, a couple of times, Lucas and Michael had offensive rebounds and those are big possessions where if we can just get over that hump a little bit or even the lead, it just turns the tide a little bit. I did think, I got a technical there and it is just a big call there. They hit both free throws and then they get the ball and scored and it just kind of goes the other direction. At that point in the game every possession is big. They are a really good team, they are well-coached and I'd like to have another crack at them." Plummer led the Lancer offense with 11 points. Good added 8 points and 11 rebounds, while Czarnecki chipped in with 7. Edison's crew stands at 3-3 heading into Christmas break. One nice thing about LaVille's schedule, according to Edison, is the Lancers could get another chance to redeem each of those three losses. "What is interesting is the three teams that we've gotten beat by are teams we could play again," noted Edison, using his fingers to start counting. "One,Bremen, if we can beat Culver in the first round of the (Everwise) Bi-County, Glenn if they can make it to the finals and we can make it to the finals. And also Hebron, who could be a possible sectional opponent." Hebron's Landen Hale hit for a game-high 17 points, including 3 from long distance. Roy Trever added 10 for the winners.
