MISHAWAKA - LaVille's Alyvia Wickizer is going to semi-state. The Lancer sophomore finished third in the 110-lb weight class to punch her ticket to the next level - Penn Semi-State at The Palace on January 5. Admission will be $10 each. Age 5-and-under are admitted free. The following weight classes will be contested - 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, 235. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EST. Wickizer started the regional off with a victory by fall over Penn freshman Piper Forsgron in 5:21. "My first match was against a girl from Penn," said Wickizer. "After that match I felt like I did something good for not just myself but also my team. Before my match I just thought about how bad I really wanted to place at regionals and make it into semi-state. I was able to get the pin late in the third period. I just had to keep fighting and remember what I was capable of." In the semifinal round, Wickizer battled Mishawaka freshman Na' Leah Suggs for nearly three rounds before falling short at the 5:36 mark. "Yes my second match of the day could have put me in the championship round," Wickizer said of her chance to wrestle for a regional title. "I feel like I could have beat her. I have a few things I need to fix and that is okay because if you don’t lose you can’t learn." She took a 1-1 record into the consolation round against Penn sophomore Daphne Pavnica. The two gals battled for three periods, before Wickizer claimed a 5-3 decision. With that victory, the Lancer sophomore finished in third overall. "My third match of the day I was sore and tired," explained Wickizer. "I just saw my family there and it made me remember how important and amazing this is for me. While I was wrestling I just had to use the technique I had that would allow me to stay out of the tie." According to Wickizer, she started wrestling nine years ago, "but recently have been taking it more seriously and locking down on my skills and techniques." She is looking forward to the opportunity to wrestle at the Penn Semi-State. "The chance to represent myself at semi-state is an amazing opportunity for me and a chance to prove to people how hard I have worked to come this far. I personally just need to be in the right mind set. I need to use the technique, strength, and power I have." As numbers continue to rise, girls high school wrestling is seeing participation in the girls state tournament grow. In fact, over 1,000 young ladies participated in the IHSGW regional at 16 sites around Indiana last weekend. On January 5, the semi-state round will visit four sites in the Hoosier state - Mooresville, Muncie Central, Penn, and Rochester. Indiana High School Girls Wrestling is following all rules and regulations as set forth by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. "Wrestling and all girls regionals was a great experience and it showed me and many other girls what they were capable of," concluded Wickizer. "My placing at regionals showed that all of the work I have put in has paid off. I have learned a lot during wrestling, mostly that hard work pays off, and what I am actually capable of. "I am thankful for my team and my coaches and my family for helping me and anybody is capable of wrestling. If they are in the right mindset and they’re actually dedicated and if that’s what they want to do never let anyone tell you differently."
