LAKEVILLE - Coming into Wednesday's high school basketball game against Culver, LaVille head coach Michael Edison knew the Cavaliers could score the ball.  He also expected a good bit of scoring from beyond the arc. It took Edison's crew a bit to adjust to the pressure before going on a  scoring explosion of their own in defeating Culver, 85-57, and sending the Lancers to the semifinal round of the 59th Everwise Bi-County Tournament. Culver came out ready to go, pushing the tempo and LaVille up and down the floor. The Cavaliers took leads of 12-8, 17-16, and 21-18 as the first quarter was a sprinter's pace. LaVille, however, would settle down and, with the help of coach Edison, found itself getting deflections and steals to go with a 12-0 burst in the second quarter to take a 43-33 lead. "We knew Culver was going to trap and press us quite a bit," said Edison.  "We did not handle their pressure as well as we needed to in the first quarter.  I also was not pleased with the way we were not crashing the boards hard enough.  It seemed as though Culver was playing with more intensity than we were.  In the 2nd quarter we got things rolling a little bit and started playing sharper!" Edison's team was able to continue building on its lead as the second half progressed to advance to the semifinal round against Bremen. "We had all 8 of our players score which was nice for everyone to get in the scoring column," explained Edison.  "Collin and Lucas led the way with Lance and Michael each chipping in for over double figures.  Michael had 13 rebounds which were really big for us.  Avery had some nice shots around the baskets and ended up with 8 points.  I thought the 3 players off the bench all really gave us a spark at different times throughout the game.  Cody played some really good defense and Braedyn made some good passes as he was our outlet in the middle as our guards were getting trapped.  It was an overall solid game for everyone on our squad." In the end, LaVille found a way to outrun Culver, limit the deep range 3s, and put up the highest offensive output since 86 points v. Culver on January 15, 2019. "We started to be able to handle their pressure a little bit and were able to pick them apart and get good looks," concluded Edison.  "Also, we started rebounding and not giving them 2nd and 3rd opportunities on the same possession." Czarnecki led all scorers with 23 points.  Plummer added 20 points and 7 rebounds. Good worked his way to his second double-double of the season, collecting 12 points and 13 rebounds.  Edison came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points. Edison's team took advantage of 15 steals.  Andre Gonzales was the top sniper with four. LaVille evened its record at 5-5 overall and will face rival Bremen in the second semifinal on January 19 at 8 p.m. The Lions took the regular season opener in Lakeville on November 30 by a 52-45 count.  Bremen moved to the semis following a 43-38 win at New Prairie in round one of the Everwise Bi-County Tournament.
