LAKEVILLE - It's a basketball night in Lakeville! For the first time since in nearly a week, the LaVille basketball team returns to the 2023-24 schedule. A Hoosier North Athletic Conference game with Culver is scheduled for January 26.  The junior varsity is set to tip at 6 p.m., with the varsity game to follow. There will be a short recognition prior to the start of Homecoming at LaVille. Activities are scheduled at the conclusion of the JV game. The two teams met on January 17, with Michael Edison's club picking up an 85-57 victory over the Cavaliers. Junior Collin Czarnecki led all scorers with 28 points.  Lucas Plummer had 20 points, Michael Good contributed 12 and Lance Edison added 12 to send LaVille on to the semifinal round. David Hite led Culver with 19 points and Jack Rodgers chipped in with 16 points on Jan. 17. Culver is 6-6 overall and coming off a 66-49 loss at Oregon-Davis on January 24. Kyle Evans, in his 4th season at Culver, has the Cavaliers averaging 59.3 points per game.  The defense allows 59.2 points per outing. "Culver is a very skilled team that plays tremendously hard," said Edison, who is 18-3 all-time against CHS.  "I have coached long enough to know that past performances against a team does not mean it will happen when a team is played again in the future.  Culver will be ready to go and it will be a very difficult game for us.  Playing them once already does not give us an advantage or a disadvantage.  It simply will be another game against a familiar opponent." LaVille is 6-6 overall and 3-0 in HNAC play. The Lancers are coming off a 59-52 loss to John Glenn in the championship game of the Everwise Bi-County Basketball Tournament. When asked about the style of play from the January 17 game - the fact that LaVille put four players in double-digits and 85 points on the scoreboard - does Edison think that pace could repeat itself? "The way Culver plays defense lends itself to this type of game," noted Edison.  "They trap and press and go all out all the time.  By doing this they are able to get a lot of steals and deflections.  If they are not successful then they open themselves up to easy baskets, which we were able to capitalize on." Edison is also well aware of Rodgers. "Rodgers does everything well!" said the LaVille skipper.  "He is a stat sheet stuffer as he leads them in practically every category.  He totally makes their team go and has a knack of making everyone else better.  He was in foul trouble the first time we played them and this was a significant factor in the outcome." With LaVille sitting atop the Hoosier North with a 3-0 record, Edison's crew knows this is a big game. According to the Lancer boss, keys to a victory include, "Containing Rodgers, handling their traps/pressure, and finishing on the offensive end when given opportunities."
