LAKEVILLE - For the first time in 25 years, La Lumiere returns to the LaVille basketball schedule. The Lakers and Lancers last met on February 15, 1999, at Cox Gymnasium. LaVille picked up a 73-42 victory under coach Doug Reid. Michael Edison's club will greet La Lumiere on February 1 at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. The varsity-only tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be streamed by clicking Live Stream: https://www.ihsaatv.org/?B=776579 La Lumiere, who participates in the South Short Athletic Conference, is 8-6 overall following a 63-50 loss at St. Francis of Wheaton, Ill., on January 27. Coach Brandon Wright brings in one of the taller rosters to play the Lancers. In fact, no player is listed smaller than 5'10" and the average size of the probable starting line-up runs 6'1". Wright's roster also includes several players from outside of the United States, including France, Republic of Georgia, Russia, and Taiwan. Players are also from Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, and Indiana to round out the Laker team. The La Lumiere boss joined the school in the fall of 2020. During his time as head coach, the regional team won the 2021 and 2022 SSAC regular season and 2021 SSAC tournament championship. LaVille's original 2023-24 schedule listed Purdue Polytechnic of South Bend, but that game was removed and replaced by La Lumiere. "We were supposed to play Purdue Polytech," Edison said of the original plan. "But they let us know that it was not going to work out so (Athletic Director) Mr. (Will) Hostrawser searched for another opponent and found La Lumiere." According to Edison, Wright's squad likes to push the pace and spot up from the outside. "They push the ball up the court and play with a lot of intensity," Edison noted of the LaPorte visitors. "They have several shooters and are good passers. It will be a good test for us. "#11 (Cuba Smith) is a very well-rounded player as he can dribble, pass, attack the basket and shoot from the perimeter. He gets all the other players involved as well. They have another couple of guards that can fill it up from deep as well." It will be the second game in a row for LaVille, after a 84-45 non-conference victory over Career Academy South Bend on Wednesday. LHS will close a three-game week February 3 at West Noble. The Saturday matinee will get started with the junior varsity at 1 p.m. The varsity game will follow. Edison's team started strong against the Trailblazers, opening up a big lead, then sustained the gap for the final margin. "Our guys shot the ball very well to start the game off and we had contributions from all the players on the team, which was really nice," said Edison. "It was nice for everyone to get to play and contribute in such a positive manner. CASB did not have their 2 best players at the game for some unknown reason." Collin Czarnecki led all scorers with a season-high 26 points. Michael Good had 14 points, while Avery Garrett tallied a career-high 10 points off the bench. Lucas Plummer and Lance Edison chipped in with 9 points each. The Lancers expect a lot of man-to-man defenses with maybe a little pressing/trapping from time to time, according to the Lancer skipper. LHS will look to, slow down La Lumiere's transition, get off to a good, fast start, and take them out of some things on the defensive end. Game on.
