'D' Leads The Way In "Senior Night' Basketball Victory

LAKEVILLE - Prior to Saturday's 'Senior Night' game against Trinity Greenlawn, LaVille head basketball coach Michael Edison knew his club needed to accomplish a few goals. Edison wanted the Lancers to get up the floor in transition on offense, not allow the Titans to set up on defense, and play solid defense of their own. "I did think we were able to get some transition points on offense," Edison said after watching his crew pick up a 50-26 victory at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. "Even though we had to go against their match up zone a decent amount I was still pleased with our patience in finding high percentage shots. We were able to hit some shots and get good looks throughout the game." On February 24, the LaVille basketball team played host to Trinity Greenlawn in the final 2023-24 regular season game of the season, which also included senior recognition for Michael Good and Lucas Plummer, along with their parents. The Lancer defense was solid much of the night, limiting Trinity to 21% from beyond the arc, under 30% from the field overall and 22 turnovers. "We ran a 1-3-1 extended half court trap for a good portion of the game as I knew they were trying to be patient and have longer possessions on offense," I really wanted to try to speed them up a little bit. We were able to get them to turn the ball over more than normal and we were able to get them to rush a little more than they wanted to. Our guys really did a great job on the defensive end." While the defense was limiting the Titan offense, the Lancer offense was able to convert. "I did think we were able to get some transition points on offense," noted Edison. "Even though we had to go against their match up zone a decent amount I was still pleased with our patience in finding high percentage shots. We were able to hit some shots and get good looks throughout the game." Both teams started slow in the first quarter, with the Lancers holding a 9-6 lead. LHS increased the defensive intensity with the aforementioned 1-3-1 extended half court trap, picked up some deflections and steals, and utilized an array of offense to increase the lead in the middle quarters. Lancer Nation watched as LaVille outscored Trinity 32-14 in the middle quarters to take command of the game. Collin Czarnecki, Braedyn Foster, Good, and Plummer contributed from all over the floor, including a couple of dunks by Good. "Collin had an extremely solid effort and was a big key to our success," Edison said of his latest 1,000-point scorer. "It is nice to have him playing so well heading into sectionals. He played well on both ends of the court and continues to lead in a lot of different categories." Czarnecki led all scorers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Good made his presence known inside the paint, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double. Plummer added 7 points, including a trey, and Foster 6 points and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. "Michael and Lucas both had an all around solid game for us," Edison said of his two seniors. "It was nice to see each of them get at least one dunk a piece. Michael laid his body out 3 times in the first half diving for the ball. It was great to see the effort by him. Both boys had a very good offensive and defensive game for us. Lucas did a great job at the top of our 1-3-1 trap and really bothered the opposing guard. I was happy for both of them to end their career here on a high note." The Lancer skipper continued his praise of the LaVille defense. "I think our defensive pressure was a big key and our ability to knock down shots and convert on offense," Edison said when asked about what he felt the difference was for his squad. "We need to carry that over to this week as we play against South Bend Career Academy." LaVille improved to 12-11 overall and will face Career Academy South Bend in the 6:30 p.m. opener of the 2A North Judson Sectional 34 state tournament.
