Basketball Falls To North Judson

NORTH JUDSON - Things looked good early in the 2A Sectional 34 high school basketball championship for LaVille. Coach Michael Edison's club and host North Judson are Hoosier North Athletic Conference rivals and banged heads before.  And even though the two will be part of new conferences moving forward, the two are set to meet again next season. With North Judson and LaVille battling through a 12-8 Lancer lead to start the second quarter, Blue Jay guard Quinn Bales found some space, and a little rhythm to get the offense going. Kole Wilcox started the second period off with a field goal, before Bales went off.  The 6'3" senior swished three 3-point bombs in the middle portion of the stanza, then added a couple more buckets to finish with 15 of his game-high 19 points in the tide-turning second eight minutes. That second quarter offensive burst helped shift the momentum as LaVille suffered a 48-33 setback to the Blue Jays at The Nest during the North Judson Sectional semifinal. Hebron won the second semifinal by defeating South Central (Union Mills), 71-65, to advance to the championship. "Bales got started with an open three pointer in the corner," said LaVille coach Michael Edison.  "Then had two very long threes in that second quarter that really opened it up for them. The Blue Jays went on a 17-6 spurt as the momentum shifted before halftime. On defense, North Judson pressured the ball and was doing their best to limit the LaVille guard combination of Lucas Plummer and Collin Czarnecki. Down low, the Blue Jays also disrupted the play of Lancer big man Michael Good. "NJSP did a great job on defense against Colin, really limiting the good looks he was able to get," explained Edison.  "They were up 20–18 on us and then went on a nice run to end the first half and we were never able to recover.  When we started pressing they were able to break it and just get easy looks." Several times against the LaVille diamond press, the Blue Jays were able to work the ball up the floor and get open looks and attack the basket. "(Connor) Benson did a nice job handling the ball, penetrating, and kicking it to open guys,"said the Lancer skipper.  "We just dug ourselves a hole and could not get out of it." LaVille continued to battle in the second half, but were never able to find a rhythm offensively. "Unfortunately, we just never were able to make it a competitive game in the second half," closed Edison. Czarnecki fought through the physical play of the game, switching, and helpside defense to finish the season with 15 points.  Lancer Edison came off the bench to score 6, while seniors Lucas Plummer and Michael Edison finished their career with 5 and 4 points, respectively. Wilcox supported Bales' scoring with 14 of his own, scoring in each quarter. Benson chipped in with 8 points. Coach Edison graduates two seniors - guard and versatile player Lucas Plummer, along with high-flying Michael Good.  LaVille finished the season with a 13-12 overall record.
