LAKEVILLE - Michael Good has been chasing a dream. The LaVille three-sport athlete plays football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and participates on the track and field team in the spring. When it comes time for track season, Good can be found in the throwing area - discus and shot put. And for several years, the Lancer senior has eyed the school-record on the wall outside of Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. More directly, the discus record. Last season, Good sat out the track season to give his shoulders a rest. So far this school year, he has played football and basketball. With the 2024 spring season ahead, Good wanted to join forces with his teammates one more time. He also wanted to take another crack at a couple of goals - LaVille school-record in discus, and hopefully, if he can stay healthy, participate in the IHSAA state track and field championships. The track and field record board posted on the south wall as you enter Cox Gym has read 161'-1" since the record was broke in 1997 by James Bettcher. Good knows very well about that particular record. "That record has been a goal of mine for a long time," Good said after setting the new school record in the discus. "I'm happy this came early in the year. We still have a long way to go." According to Good, the goal-setting came during a discussion with his mom - Beth. "I was talking to my mom before she left for vacation," recalled Good. "We talked about setting goals and what I wanted to accomplish at different meets. I wanted to get 150 feet at the Plymouth meet and I was able to do that." Then came the first home meet of the season against Elkhart Christian Academy and Trinity Greenlawn. After coming off a sunny, 75-degree day on Monday, the weather was just as pleasant on Tuesday. "The weather was really good," Good said of the near-perfect 72-degree day. "It was one of the better days we have had. It wasn't too warm, and it wasn't too rainy." As he was working through his warm-up, Good told me that he stopped and thought to himself, ". . . as a discus thrower, today is the day to PR!" There were 12 athletes competing in discus on this day. And, as luck would have it, Good was the final thrower of the group. His positioning gave him the advantage of knowing what distance the other throwers finished with and where he stood. "In warm ups, I felt good," Good recalled of his preparation. "As I was waiting on-deck, I was like, okay. If today is the day (to break the record) or if today is not the day, just relax and throw." Knowing what his goal was and with the near-perfect spring weather, Good let fly with his first attempt. "On the throw, my release was pretty good," Good said of that initial throw. "I didn't watch it. In fact, when I turned around it still had a ways to go. Then I heard 'Mark' and I kept my ear open. I heard coach (Jeff) Kaiser say, 'Michael Good' ... That's a 165'-3". "It felt really good!" Good continued. "Erik (Bedock) was nearby and so was coach (Isaac) Eash. Coach Eash is a good coach. He knows me and he helps talk me through things and is very reassuring. I was also glad that Erik was able to make it out there (to the discus). "With him not being able to throw this year, he is like a second coach to me when coach Eash isn't there. I also had a lot of family out there." "I kept thinking, if it's far enough, it's far enough. I wasn't really nervous. But I kinda was. I went in there with a good mind set. Throwing is mental . . . it's also a lot of technique. We've got the ball rolling and I've got to keep working to get better if I want to move on (to compete in the state tournament)." Good and his teammates return to the field on April 18 at Knox, with Triton. The boys track and field team will then travel to the Goshen Relays on April 20. In the meantime, Good will continue to chase another dream . . . advancing along the IHSAA state track and field tournament.
