INDIANAPOLIS - If you follow sports, you are familiar with the ESPY's. The ESPY awards are the Academy Awards of sports. In Indiana, we have the GRIDDYS, which recognizes the best players, coaches, and media representatives in Indiana High School Football. Mr. Paul Condry and his team at the Indiana Football Digest, along with Regional Radio Sports Network and in collaboration with the Indianapolis Colts and high school coaches help create a year-end celebration of Indiana High School Football. Each year over 400 attendees gather together for this banquet and award ceremony to honor the above mentioned group of people. This year the event took place at the Indianapolis Colts indoor practice facility. This year, LaVille's own Lucas Plummer was recognized as the small-school punter recipient of a GRIDDY Award. "I found out about this event after one of my basketball games in January," Plummer recalled of the notification. "After one of the basketball games, coach (Jeff) Kaiser told me. We were supposed to keep it quiet until after the ceremony." During the 2023 football season, Plummer helped guide the Lancer football team to an 11-2 season and Class 2A Sectional championship. Following the evening meal, GRIDDY recipients were called to the stage for the opportunity to be recognized. "When I got called up to receive my award I felt very honored to be in a room filled with other great athletes," explained Plummer. "I am very appreciative that my family was there to support me throughout my recognition." Over the four years that Plummer was part of LaVille Football, the Lancers finished with a 36-8 overall record, two sectional titles, the first-ever unbeaten regular season, and the Hoosier North Athletic Conference championship. Plummer finished his senior season with a 39.1 yards per punt average, 55.2 yards a kickoff. The 6-foot, 3-inch senior completed 84 of 158 passes for 1,086 yards and 13 touchdown passes. On the ground, Plummer carried the balls 121 times for 529 yards and four TDs. "I had a lot of fun in my four years of playing LaVille football and it helped me become a better leader on and off the field," concluded Plummer, who also finished sixth in Indiana in punting average. "What I will miss most about playing LaVille football is playing with my friends, and of course, playing under the Friday night lights." Indiana's best small-school punter . . . Congraulations, Lucas!
